Superman shouldn't look so pale.
Superman shouldn't feel so frail.
Superman shouldn't be hurt.
Blood… Too much blood.
"Bruce… You… found me…"
Superman's voice shouldn't sound so weak. So low that it could be barely be heard. So fragile and torn.
Too late… It's too late…
"You can't save me all the time, Bruce."
Superman's eyes should be bright, shouldn't look so dim. It should be filled with hope and joy, not pain, not fear, not despair.
"Bruce, oh Bruce… You will be fine. You're strong, my dark knight... You'll be fine."
Superman shouldn't lie.
"Promise… you'll be fine, love. Promise me… please…"
Superman shouldn't ask for the impossible. Should know better than to ask. Should know that humans can't do the impossible.
"I promise." Batman lies, because he doesn't know what else to do. Because there is nothing else he can do.
Superman knows it's a lie but accepts it anyway because there is nothing else he can do.
"I'm sorry, Bruce. So… so… sorry. I wish… I could stay by your side. Like I promised… Oh God, Bruce… I'm sorry…"
Superman's voice shouldn't sound so cracked and broken. Superman's eyes shouldn't be filled with love and regret, not when he's in so much pain.
Superman shouldn't have to apologize.
Superman shouldn't be dying.
