I lie in his arms, listening to my own breathing in the near silence. His stone-cold arms embrace me in the gentlest way possible for something so solid. His cheek is pressed into my hair; my face is in the hollow of his neck. I would give everything to join his world, to stop the deadening fatigue that oppresses me now. A single tear flavoured with longing rolls down my cheek. He touches it tenderly and whispers: "I know." To see his utter perfection and know that he can never truly be mine is like a knife to my twisted, broken heart. I curl up closer and cry.

"Bella, if I could be human for you, I would. If I had to die to save you, I would." He whispers urgently.

"Don't you understand?? You are my life now Edward. I have to be with you for ever."

"Bella, I can't!" he says, louder in his obvious anguish, "If I asked you, begged you to kill my soul, would you?"

"Edward, as long as I am with you, my soul will remain intact. Please, please Edward. Can't you see that without you, I am nothing?
