He is a surgeon. So is she. It is their job to fix things.

He judges her. She pities him. He is a surgeon. It is his job to fix what is broken - but he has no idea how to fix this. They lay in bed pretending to be asleep because nothing more to say to one another. He knows the number of freckles on her shoulders, thirty-four. He knows she doodles when she talks on the phone. He knows that though she has no interest in basketball, when the Celtics are playing she makes his favorites - for good luck. And he knows that in the seven years that they have been friends, the three that she has been his "person", the thousands of moments in between where he has gone from loving her to falling in love with her, he never imagined this.

She pities him. He judges her. She's not sure what is worse. She is a surgeon. It is her job to mend the hurt. She has no idea how to ease this pain. So she tries to pretend everything is the same when it is not. She puts the coffee to boil, pours two mugs. She pretends stepping into the shower alone is normal. Pretends that the absence of jest and laughter is normal. Pretends that avoiding his gaze as she changes is normal. But, she can't pretend anymore. So, as he takes a sip of coffee, she says what she knows: "I love you".

They agree that they need space (really she just wants him to be happy). He has nowhere else to go, no one really to turn to, so he gets the apartment. But, when the door clicks behind her, he too goes to their bedroom digging out a duffel bag from the depths of the closet, unceremoniously dumping the most basic of his belongings inside. Grabbing his key off of her hook he locks the door behind him. The apartment is not home when she is gone.

He is a surgeon. So is she. It is their job to heal people.

And as he opens the door to his car, shoving the bag in the backseat, he realizes that if faith is believing what you can't see then he does have a little bit of faith. Not in God. Not in Jesus. But in them.

He is a husband. She is a wife. It is their job to heal each other - they are good at their jobs. After all, there are still dirty dishes in the sink.
