Happy birthday, Canada!

Bonne fête, Canada!

July 1st

Known to the Ancient Romans as the Kalends of Quintilis, or as it was later known as, Iulius. It simply marked the beginning of the month that is now called July.

Many important events have happened on this day throughout history.

In 1543, England and Scotland signed the peace Treaty of Greenwich to try to unite the two kingdoms by a royal marriage. That same year in December the treaty was rejected and fighting resumed, but that is a story for another time.

In 1798, Napoleon's fleet reached Alexandria Egypt to begin their invasion.

In 1867, the Dominion of Canada was formed and this was the event that Matthew Williams celebrated every year on July 1st- Canada Day. His birthday.

He enjoyed this holiday as much as his beloved maple. It was a time that patriotism ran through his people like a wildfire and was shown in parades and songs.

If he really thought about it, the Canadian and American people celebrated in fairly similar ways. The major difference, of course, was that one group celebrated Canada and the other celebrated America.

The difference was much greater between Matthew Williams and his brother, Alfred F. Jones. While Alfred was all for a huge party that the entire world was invited to, Matthew was fine with just a simple gathering with his family after spending the day with his people.

It was currently late at night and he was at his home with America, France, and England. Sometimes he found it hard to believe that the people who forgot who he was quite often were always there for his birthday.

Remnants of the party were all over the room. There were streamers on the floor from when Francis and Arthur had gotten into an argument. He smiled at the memory. Those two never got along that well but always dimmed down their arguments on his birthday.

He was shaken out of his thoughts by his brother's voice. "Yo! Mattie! When do we get to eat the cake?"

Arthur answered for him. "After he blows out the candles and makes a wish, you git!"

"Aww~ so mean Iggy."

"Shut up."

Francis looked at Matthew with a slight smirk on his face. "Mon petit, why don't you go over to the cake? They may be quiet then."

At his father's suggestion Matthew walked over the table that the cake was on. It was truly amazing with two layers that were decorated in delicately drawn maple leaves. The candle on top was shaped like a maple leaf as well. Apparently Francis had also gone so far as to fill the center of the cake with maple syrup which sounded delicious.

His family made their way to Matthew. Alfred quickly grabbed a lighter and lit the candle. He then smiled at Matthew before nodding at him. "Go ahead so we can start the song."

Matthew leaned over the cake as they started to sing.

"Happy birthday to you,

Joyeux anniversaire,

Happy birthday dear Matthew,

Joyeux anniversaire!"

He blew out the candle as Arthur yelled, "Bloody frog! You were supposed to sing in English!"

"But I did! For part of it I sang in your ugly language and for the rest I sang in the language d'amour!"

Matthew let out a quick laugh as Alfred quickly joined in the argument before making his wish.

I wish that we could stay this close for forever.
