Broken

Regina pulled her knees closer to her chest. Her breathing was unsteady, her tears falling down her face. She put her head onto her arms and looked into her lap. She could hear footsteps approaching the door of her office. She took a breath as she felt and heard the knock on the door.

"Regina, look I know you're in there. Please, let me in. I know that what's going on with you isn't easy. But, Regina…I'm your friend Regina. I'm here for you…"

She heard Emma trail off. She looked up at the ceiling. Her breath still heavy, tears still falling just as hard. "Go away, Ms. Swan." Regina could almost feel the hurt of the blonde through the door at the formal name.

"No, I will not walk away from you! We have come to far!"

14 Weeks earlier.

Regina paced her master bathroom, glancing over at the vanity counter every couple of seconds. Her glance towards a pregnancy test on the counter. Her heart beating quickly, her breathing heavy, pulse rushing.

A timer dinged, Regina's stomach immediately dropped. She moved her hair from her face and took a deep breath, then picked up the pregnancy test. Tears filled her eyes as she looked down, Positive filled the little circle in the middle of the stick. She threw the test into the sink and put her hands on the counter, leaning into the vanity as her head dropped. Her emotions were all over the place, she felt happiness because it was a baby. A baby she never thought she could ever have, but it was Robins baby, and Robin was dead.

The next day.

"Regina, come on back we are ready for you."

Regina looked up from her book when she heard her name. She smiled towards Dr. Whale, walking towards the door he held open. He guided her into a small exam room.

"Okay, here is a gown." He handed her a hospital gown. "Go ahead and change into that, then when you are finished we will run some tests and then do an ultrasound." He looked towards the door then back at her. "Are we waiting on anyone?"

Regina shook her head and looked down. "No, it's just me."

Dr. Whale nodded and headed out the door. When the door was shut, Regina let out a deep sigh. She started to remove her clothes slowly, trying to keep her breathing steady. She could feel every beat of her heart, hear ever tick in the clock, even the slight wind of the AC. She couldn't believe this was happening. She wasn't even supposed to be able to have children, and yet here she was getting an ultrasound, because she was pregnant with her dead boyfriend's baby.

She heard a knock on the door, pulling her from her thoughts. She took another deep breath, "Enter."

A short, redheaded nurse came in and smiled. Followed behind her was Dr. Whale. She smiled slightly to the side, then climbed onto the bed.

Dr. Whale approached her and put a hand on her shoulder. "You ready to see your baby?"

Regina tried to hold back the tears filling in her eyes. She nodded and smiled slightly.

Dr. Whale adjusted her gown and the sheets, giving her privacy. He grabbed a tube of gel from the machine stand. "This is going to be a little cold okay. Ready?"

Regina nodded. Her mind still racing with complete shock. When he placed the probe on her belly and a flutter filled the air, her mind suddenly halted all thoughts. She looked towards the monitor, letting a single tear fall. "Is that…"

Dr. Whale nodded, interrupting her. "That Regina, that's your baby's heartbeat."

Regina pulled up her car to the front of Henry's school. She smiled brightly and rolled down the window when her son approached the car.

Henry leaned down and looked in the window. "Mom, what are you doing here? I thought Emma was picking me up today?"

Regina smiled. "I texted your mom. We are meeting her and the Charming's at Granny's"

Henry shrugged, then got into the car. "Something going on?"

Regina put her hand on her son's chin, rubbing her thumb slightly along Henry's jaw. "You'll see." She put her hand down, putting the car in drive. "Ready?"

Henry nodded.

When they arrived at Granny's Regina was surprised to see that everyone else had already arrived. Henry got out of the car and walked around to greet his mother. She smiled and put her arm around his shoulders. Walking into the diner together, they were greeted by bright smiling faces of their family.

When they approached the table, Henry bent down to kiss the top of Neal's head. Regina walked towards Zelena, who was holding baby Robin. She rubbed a small finger over the tiny hand and then sat down next to her sister. Henry sat in between his mothers.

Snow looked towards Regina and tilted her head. "Alright, you going to tell us now why you brought us all here."

Everyone looked towards Regina. Regina felt a blush creep up her neck. She nodded and smiled. She looked around the table, stopping slightly to look at the blonde sitting next to her son. Her heart pounded a little quicker at the sight of the blonde. She shook her head, then cleared her throat. "Yes, okay. So, I brought you all here because I am trying to be better at this whole family thing." She looked towards Henry glancing slightly at Emma. "I'm learning that I need to not keep doing things alone."

Snow reached across the table. "We are always here for you, Regina. What's wrong?"

Faces dropped, slightly concerned at what the brunette might say. Regina couldn't help but steal one more glance towards the blonde, hiding it by making it look like she was looking at Henry. She interlocked her fingers with Henry and smiled. She took a breath. She knew she needed to just get it over with or she would lose the courage. She was so used to doing things alone. Yet, now she had all this family. She didn't need to do it alone anymore. "I'm pregnant."

Gasps filled the room. Zelena was the first to state the obvious. "But, Robin? He's dead."

Regina rolled her eyes and glared at her sister. "I'm 8 weeks pregnant. It happened right before he died."

Emma looked at Regina and reached across her son. She placed her hand over Regina's. "I'm so happy for you. Anything you need. I'm here for you."

Snow placed a hand over the two women's hands. "You will not have to do this alone."

Regina smiled brightly, looking around at her family. Once again, she paused slightly looking at the blonde, who seemed to have a strange emotion in her eyes. It was almost like jealousy. She blinked and tried to ignore it. "Thank you all so much."

4 Weeks later.

Regina leaned against her kitchen counter. She sipped her tea softly, looking at the clock. Five minutes till 9am. She rolled her eyes. The savior cutting it close once again. Just as the clock chimed the top of the hour, the doorbell rang. She placed her mug in the sink, moved her hair out of her face and walked towards the door. She opened it, raising a brow at the blonde, "You're cutting it close, Ms. Swan."

The blonde rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry, blame our son."

Henry came up behind his blonde mother. "Hay, you were the…"

Emma stopped him before he could finish his sentence. She blushed slightly, pushing her hands into her front pockets. She tilted her head, letting her hair drape into her eyes slightly. "Okay, it was my fault. I mean does it really matter?"

Regina just shook her head and gestured towards the car. "Shall we."

Emma nodded. "Come on kid let's get your mom to the doctor. Ready to find out whether you're going to have a brother or sister?"

Henry smiled brightly. His moms wrapped theirs arms around him, the three of them walking to the car.

Dr. Whale looked down towards Regina, stomach exposed, then looked up at Emma and Henry. "You all ready to see what the next addition is going to be?"

Regina took a breath and smiled. She could feel her heart beat faster, mind racing with worries and fears. She softly gasped when Emma reached and interlocked their hands. She smiled at the touch of the blonde. Trying to ignore the sudden rush of butterflies in the pit of her stomach. She looked back towards the doctor. "Ready."

Emma squeezed Regina's hand softly, looked to Henry, then to the doctor. "Ready," Henry and Emma said together.

Dr. Whale smiled. "Alright, let's do it then." He applied the gel to her belly, then the probe. He moved it around slightly till a little blob appeared on the screen, along with a heartbeat filling the air. "There, heartbeat is strong. The little one is looking good."

Regina sighed a sigh of relief, looking towards the blonde. She couldn't help but smile when their eyes met. "Thank you for being here." She turned towards Henry. "Both of you."

Henry smiled. "You don't have to do anything alone anymore mom."

Emma smiled. "The kids right. We have your back Regina. We are family now."

Dr. Whale smiled and froze the screen. He pointed to the screen. "There is your baby."

Regina looked at the screen and smiled, holding back the tears in her eyes. "So, what is it." Emma squeezed Regina's hand again as they waited a response. Henry put his hand on his brunette mother's shoulder.

Dr. Whale smiled. "She is a beautiful baby girl."

Regina couldn't hold back her tears anymore. "A girl." She looked up at Emma, who was beaming down at her. "A girl."

Emma hugged Regina. "A girl."

Henry wrapped his arms around both of his mother's. "A girl! Yes, I got a sister."

Regina laughed. "You're going to be a wonderful big brother."

2 Weeks later.

Regina rolled over on her side and looked at the framed picture of her baby girl. She was the size of a passion fruit, but she was perfect. Regina felt nothing but joy, she still felt as if it wasn't real. She smiled brighter when she felt a small kick in her belly. "Good morning my love," She whispered softly before hearing her phone buzz. She reached out to pick up her phone, smiling at the blonde's name.

Emma: Hay! Henry and I were thinking of going to Granny's. Wanna come?

Regina: Emma, do you and our son eat anything but Granny's?

Emma: I don't think you want me killing our son with my cooking.

Regina couldn't help but laugh as she read the last text message Emma had sent. She shook her head before replying.

Regina: Alright, true. Meet in an hour?

Emma: Perfect! See you soon! :)

Regina smiled and put her phone back on the bedside table. She hoped out of bed and began taking her silk pajamas off. She stopped to look in the full body mirror near the closet. She ran the palm of her hand over her very small baby bump. She smiled and let a single tear of joy fall down her cheek. She ran her hand over her belly one more time, then walked into the bathroom to take a shower.

She pulled up to the diner and got out of her car. As she walked up to the diner she took a few breaths, to steady her heart beat. She didn't understand why she was so nervous to see her son and the blonde. Her, Emma and Henry had been spending a lot more time together lately. This baby had created this magnet, bringing the blonde and brunette together. It was like the three of them were a family, spending almost every day together. It was nice, she missed Robin. But, he was gone, she knew that. And this, well it felt like a new beginning.

She opened the door to the diner and walked over to the booth where Henry and Emma sat. She smiled as she approached the booth, her first instinct was to sit next to Emma. But, she decided to sit next to Henry instead. She scooted close to her son and kissed the side of his head.

Emma smiled brightly at the brunette. "We ready to order?"

Regina and Henry nodded simultaneously. Emma reached up a hand to signal Ruby to come and take their orders. As Ruby finished taking their orders Regina suddenly became flush.

Emma looked at the brunette. "Hay Regina, you okay?"

The brunette suddenly jumped up and ran to the bathroom. She slammed the door to a stall open, quickly releasing the contents in her stomach, which was mostly water. She slid down to the floor, hearing footsteps approaching. The stall door was suddenly being swung open softly. She looked up to see the blonde staring down at her with concern. She shook her head and slowly stood up, with help of the blonde. She flushed the toilet and walked to wash her hands, "Why do they call it morning sickness if it hits you during all parts of the day."

Emma laughed softly. "Bad joke I guess," The blonde laughed putting a comforting hand on Regina's back.

Regina shook her head, looking at her reflection in the mirror, leaning against her hands that rested on the counter. "I thought I was through with this."

Emma smiled. "That happens, I don't miss that." She put her hand on Regina's stomach, "But, when they start moving inside you, well that tends to make up for it."

Regina turned to look at Emma, instinctly put her hands over Emma's, "She kicked for the first time this morning," She smiled brightly, the smile reaching her eyes.

Emma brightened, reaching up to cup Regina's face, "Oh my god! Really? Why didn't you say something sooner, that's so exciting!"

Regina smiled. "I was going to tell both you and Henry while we ate, but I couldn't hold it in anymore." She looked into the blonde's eyes. She didn't understand why over these few weeks all she wanted to do was share every moment with the blonde. Throughout this whole process the blonde had been there, she had been there for the brunette in ways she didn't even know she needed. "Emma?"

Emma moved her hands down off Regina's face to the brunette's biceps. "Yeah?"

Regina took a breath and pulled Emma in for a tight embrace. "Thank you, thank you for being here for me through all this. Thank you for not letting me go through this alone."

Emma hummed into Regina's ear, "I wouldn't have it any other way, Regina."

Regina pulled away slightly from the blonde, suddenly feeling like she had no control over her actions, she kissed the blonde's cheek. She blushed, "Um, sorry."

Emma shook her head, moving a piece of hair behind her ear. "Don't be."

The next day

Regina walked into her living room holding three mugs in her hands. She walked towards the couch and leaned down slightly passing around the mugs to the blonde on the couch and her son sitting on the floor. She plopped down on the couch, carefully, and smiled down at her son, "Alright, what are we watching today?"

Henry glanced up at his mother's and smiled brightly, "The Avengers!"

Emma laughed, "Again?"

Henry shook his head, "Mom, there is more than one movie, you know?"

Emma nudged him softly, "Yes kid I know, smartass."

Regina raised a brow at the language. "Language, Ms. Swan."

Emma glared back at the brunette and laughed, "Oh we are back to Ms. Swan, are we?"

Regina just laughed and shook her head. Suddenly she felt a sharp pain in her belly, causing her to lean forward slightly, trying not to spill her tea.

Emma furrowed her brow slightly in concern. "Regina, you okay?"

Henry placed his mug on the coffee table and turned towards his brunette mother, "Mom?"

Regina put a hand up and smiled. "I'm fine, don't wo…" She was interupted as another sharp pain filled her abdomen, causing her to almost drop her mug.

Emma quickly grabbed the mug and placed it on the table behind her next to the couch. "Regina, come on let's get you to the doctor," She turned towards Henry, "Henry grab my keys, please."

Henry hoped up and ran to the foyer to grab his blonde mother's keys.

Emma reached out to grab Regina. "Come on, let's go."

Regina shook her head, "Emma, I'm f…aaaahhhh." The worst pain she had felt suddenly filled her body.

Emma looked down to see blood on the seat of the couch. Emma scooped up the brunette and carried her to the car, rushing towards the hospital.

Emma paced the waiting room of the hospital, her son watching her with concern as he sat in one of the many chairs. She couldn't help but think the worse. She was terrified of losing both of them, but she especially didn't want to lose the brunette she had become so close to.

They waited only an hour before Dr. Whale came towards the blonde and Henry. Emma rushed towards the doctor, "Is she okay?"

Dr. Whale looked down, then back up at her, "She is fine."

Emma sigh of relief last only a second before her concern went towards the baby. Henry rushed to her side, she put his arm around his shoulder, "And the baby?"

Dr. Whale sighed, "I'm so sorry, but she didn't make it."

Emma couldn't help the tears filling her eyes, she pulled her son closer to her. "What happened?"

Dr. Whale crossed his arms in front of his body. "Regina's uterus tore, this is something extremely rare. Usually only in cases where the mother has scar tissue, and even more rare during the first trimester. There is no telling why this has happened. We fixed the uterus, but the damage was already done and we couldn't save the baby. I am so sorry."

Emma wrapped her arms around Henry. Henry squeezed his mother tightly, letting the tears stream down his face.

"Henry, Emma…She's awake. Would you like to see her?"

Emma and Henry looked up from their hands, seeing a red headed nurse looking at them. They both nodded and followed the red head to the room Regina was in. When they got to the room Henry immediately rushed towards his brunette mother lying in the hospital bed. "I'm so sorry mom."

Regina felt weak in her son's embrace. She rubbed his back, trying to keep her tears at bay. She glanced up at the blonde leaning against the door frame, she could tell the blonde had been crying, her eyes puffy and red. She didn't realize how much the blonde cared for her. She directed her attention back to her son, pushing him back softly, looking at him with watery eyes and a small smile. "I'm okay."

Emma walked up to Henry and put her hand on his shoulder, "Hay kid, why don't you go get your mom something from the gift shop?" She held out a wad of money.

Henry nodded, grabbing the money and walking out the door.

Emma grabbed a chair from the corner of the room and pulled it close to Regina's bed. She reached out from Regina's hand, not saying a word. The two exchanged silent glances for a few moments. She quickly stood up from the chair and wrapped her arms around the brunette, still not saying a word.

Regina melted into the blonde, feeling all her emotions rush towards her, she let the tears fall from her face. She held the blonde tighter as her tears streamed harder down her face. She felt completely broken.

48 Hours later

Regina sat on her new couch Emma and Zelena had surprised her with. She was impressed at how well they chose, it was very her. She snuggled deeper into the large cotton blanket, holding her mug tightly. She turned her head as she heard Henry come into the living room.

Henry kissed his mother's cheek and smiled softly. "Hay mom, how are you feeling?"

Regina smiled, "I'm okay. This tea you bought from the gift shop is delicious, thank you."

Henry smiled, sitting next to her, "I thought you'd like it. It screamed you."

Regina reached out her hand and rubbed her thumb over his son's cheek, "It's perfect."

"You happy to be home?"

Regina nodded, "Yes, very much. 48 hours in a hospital was enough for me." She looked around, "Where did your mom go?"

Henry shrugged, "Something about Leroy brawling at the Rabbit Hole."

Regina rolled her eyes and sighed. "Oh, okay. I wanted to thank her for everything."

Henry jumped up and pulled a note out from his back pocket. "Oh, yeah sorry. She gave me this. Said to give it to you."

Regina placed her mug on the table next to the couch and reached out to grab the note. She unfolded it softly and began to read it.

Regina,

It's no problem at all.

-Emma

Regina rolled her eyes, "Guess she knows me well." She slowly got up letting the blanket fall to the floor.

Henry stood up, looking at his mom concerned, "Mom, what are you doing?"

Regina put up her hand, "I'm going to shower, I have been in a hospital for 48 hours I need a shower."

Henry nodded and watched his mother go up the stairs.

Regina stood in the shower with her hands against the shower wall. She let the water fall onto the back of her neck and down her shoulder blades. She took a breath, then turned the water off. She opened the shower door, grabbing a towel on the rack next to the shower. She walked up to the vanity, reaching up to wipe the condensation off the mirror. She stared at her reflection, leaning against the counter. She shook her head and wiped a few stray tears that had fallen from her eyes. She sighed and walked to the closet grabbing a tight red dress. She changed quickly and went to grab her watch she had left on her bedside table a few days ago.

She stopped when she saw the framed ultrasound photo. She turned quickly and threw the frame against the door, the glass shattering.

She could hear Henry rushing towards her room. The door opened quickly. "Mom!" Just as Henry came busting into her bedroom, Regina was gone in a puff of smoke.

Emma pulled up to the Rabbit Hole and sighed, walking into the bar. She spotted a wasted Leroy yelling at Archie. She ran up to him before he could punch the innocent man, grabbing his wrist. "Hey! What are we pounding psychiatrists now?" Leroy growled and tried to release from the blonde's grasp, but before he could the blonde had him leaned against the pool table and handcuffed. She escorted him outside and helped him into her squad car.

She pushed the drunk man into a cell, she closed the cell door. She signaled for him to turn around and back up to the door so she could take the cuffs off. A routine they knew all too well. She had just gotten the cuffs off when her phone rang. She reached into her back pocket and grabbed her cell.

"Henry? Everything okay?" She could hear the worry in her son's voice.

"Wait she left? She disappeared? Okay Henry, I'll find her."

But, Regina...I'm your friend Regina. I'm here for you…"

She heard Emma trail off. She looked up at the ceiling. Her breath still heavy, tears still falling just as hard. "Go away Ms. Swan." Regina could almost feel the hurt of the blonde through the door at the formal name.

"No, I will not walk away from you! We have come to far!"

Regina could hear the blonde's footsteps moving away from the door. She at first thought the blonde was leaving, but soon heard the sound of magic hit the door. She could feel the door vibrating on her back, then suddenly the door was gone. She felt a warm body slide near her and wrap arms around her.

Regina tried to fight from the embrace, punching the blonde, but Emma never stopped holding her close. She slowly stopped, the punches getting softer and slower. She stopped, letting her tears fall once more as she leaned into the blonde's chest.

Emma pulled the brunette closer to her, resting her chin softly on the brunette's head. "I'm here, you're not alone. I'm here Regina. I'm not leaving you."

Regina's sobs filled the office, the halls, the whole building was filled with the brokenness of the brunette. The feeling of lose. She could feel her heart completely shattered. She allowed herself to melt into the blonde.

I could write more, maybe make this into a 2 shot if you all wanted me to. Leave a comment/review and let me know. Should I write one more chapter?
