Zexion's eyes fluttered open, hoping to be greeted by sea-colored eyes and a smile of sunshine. Instead, his gaze rested upon the smooth slab of stone that was merely inches from his face. Frowning slightly, he glanced at his watch (had he really been there for six hours?) and reread the tombstone's inscription.
Has it really been a year? He wondered, noting the grave's date. It had been a whole 365 ¼ days since he had seen his friend's smile, since that incident happened…
Why hadn't I recognized his symptoms sooner? Why couldn't I have done anything to save him? Why wasn't it me instead? Why?
Although tears threatened to pour out of his eyes, a small smile played at his lips as he remembered his beloved's last words: "Don't let your heart stop just 'cause mine isn't working anymore! You've gotta keep smiling! Keep living! The world loves you-and I do too!" Dying of heartbreak just wasn't an option for him, was it?
Leaving a few violet-and-blue seashells on the grave, Zexion stopped to give the tombstone one last look. "I'll see you later, Dem," he murmured before walking out of the graveyard.
A/N: Happy Zemyx Day! I wanted to get something in before the day's over, so this is completely un-beta'd (sorry, Dawn). If this story seems too OOC or clichéd, I'm sorry…
