Pairings: Jack/Daniel friendship

Warnings: none I can think of

START

Daniel had been camping in his office since the last mission's debriefing. He had simply showered and changed before heading to his office at a determined pace. While he could sense his teams concern, he wanted to be alone.

When he finally locked his door, he felt an enormous sense of relief. The mask of indifference had slipped away. He focussed on his breathing, taking deep breathes in an attempt to calm his racing mind and heart. After some time he gave up. He was only making himself more frustrated by the minute.

He tried to work on some of his latest artefacts. Hopefully the distraction would work...

Again he gave up. He resisted throwing said item against the wall in renewed frustration.

He couldn't work. He couldn't think. He couldn't focus. He couldn't relax. He couldn't block out the thoughts worrying him.

He stared at the wall in stubborn anger like a stubborn teenager angry at their parents. Memories slipped into his mind. Thoughts he knew he shouldn't have.

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel...you really think your team values you that much? You know as well as I that endangering Sam is enough for Jack to consider it...

He growled out loud. It hadn't been his intention. Maybe it was his fault but he hadn't meant it. How was he to know that the words translated would be so wrong?

You keep saying that. You still put her in danger. Your friend. Your team mate. How can she ever trust you again?

Daniel took a moment to refocus. It would do little good to lose his cool. He needed to use his intelligence. He had never really known what to do with his feelings. He had come a long way since his stunted emotional skills in high school. Still he could never connect as much as he wanted with others. He could never express what he really meant or wanted to say. Maybe thats what led him to love translating other languages?

He ignored knock on his door.

To say Jack was concerned was putting it mildly. The younger team member was sensitive. When he was upset, he rarely did half way!

And he was currently ignoring Jack. Jack swore softly before taking out a spare key he had stashed away for cases like this.

Jack relaxed when he found his archaeologist unharmed physically at least. "Danny?" Jack said clearly.

Daniel seemed not to hear, locked in his own world. He seemed to be muttering to himself angrily. He was sitting on his carpet knees drawn to his chest, leaning on his knees and wrapping his arms around them. Though he physically looked tired, he was agitated.

Jack tried to call him again. When that failed, he placed a gentle hand on the others shoulder. He didn't expect Daniel to jump.

Daniel had been surprised when Jack had touched his arm. He suddenly became aware of his office and struggled to orient himself. He faintly heard Jack comforts.

Brought to full awareness, he saw Jack look relieved.

"You okay?" Jack asked, not hiding his worry.

Daniel shrugged non committally. God he was so tired! Jack seemed to see it too. "Come, let me get you to your quarters. You need sleep." he said softly.

Of course he immediately resisted the command. "Jack!" he whined, sounding like a pathetic child.

Jack mere rolled his eyes and pulled to his feet. "Don't make me take you to the infirmary!" he threatened.

He decided to comply after that. He didn't want to be sedated.

Soon Daniel was sleeping in the bed of his on base quarters. He had fallen asleep almost immediately. Jack had stayed around until he was sure Daniel would rest properly. Satisfied he left to do some paperwork in his office.

AN: R and R as usual.
