Through The Darkness

Kylan sighed, content with tonight's feed. He smiled as he felt a stray slither of blood trickle down his chin. Wiping it from his unshaven, yet handsome face, he glanced around stretching to stand at almost full height keeping his knees bent slightly so as to not draw any attention to himself. Satisfied that no mortal would spot him he extended his legs with awesome speed and attacked the clouds as he sped off into the sky.

Carrie awoke in a cold sweat, unsure of her surroundings. Sitting still, she allowed her eyes to focus and realised she was in her bedroom. She swung her legs around and placed her bare feet on the splintering wood floor. She breathed slowly, trying to calm herself down, and looked around the shabby room. The wallpaper that covered the walls was torn in places, revealing flaking plaster underneath. The window rattled in the wind and the heavy oak door was almost off its hinges, its brass handle now rusty. She stood and walked to her window, deciding that fresh air may be a good idea. After pushing the bottom pane of the window upwards, she looked out onto the streets of Preston. Most people would consider the view from her 6th floor apartment to be appaulling but she loved it. She enjoyed watching the world pass by before her eyes. She loved watching the day give way to the night. But most of all she enjoyed imagining what it would be like to live the lives of the people that passed by her building every day. Wondering what it would be like to have a family awaiting them when they arrived home from work, or wondering how it would feel to have more than enough money to pay for rent and a little food. It felt good to wander into their lives, if only for a second. But at 4.30am most people would be deep in their own dreams, not drifting around the streets. Carrie gazed down into the street below, allowing her eyes to glaze over a little. The vandalized street lights cast crazy shadow monsters on the walls and as she closed her eyes, Carrie could hear the distant whine of a siren. As she took a deep breath of icy winter air and opened her eyes, noticing an odd figure out of the corner of her eye. It had looked as if he (she presumed it was a he) had just fallen out of the sky and landed gracefully on his feet. But that was impossible. Probably just her mind playing tricks on her. Still, she was intrigued. Turning her head to where he stood she watched as he cautiously looked around and drew himself to full height. He must have been at least 7ft tall. She dared not blink as he sprinted away with supernatural speed. She watched as he was engulfed by the darkness, staring for minutes after he had disappeared. There was something about the tall, well built figure that had caught Carrie's eye, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
