Synopsis: Chase keeps the record book up to date while the kid is taken away by social services. \

Warnings: Alcoholism

Pairings: House/Chase

START:

Chase watched the child as he walked away, angry shoulders tensed. He had seen the brief look of despair, the feeling that for the first time he could not keep the world at bay. What if something happened to his mother now? What if he would have been able to do something if only he had been present?

Chase knew that feeling well. His own mother had been an alcoholic. His own father either didn't care or couldn't bare to look. Maybe even both. Chase chose to believe the former. It was easier on him. Only a child.

Before anyone could comment, he picked up the brown record book and slipped it in his pocket. Had it been left behind on purpose or accident? Surely in the midst of the shock of being taken away and the grief maybe it was an accident. Unless the book was being trusted to House?

House had gone home, it was late as per usual. He had just poured a glass of bourbon (AN: just guessing here, feel free to correct me), when he heard a hesitant knock on the door. Groaning he limped over to find Chase.

Chase followed him in, not bothering to wait for an invitation. Without speaking he placed the record book on the table. House took a sip of his alcohol before breaking the silence. "I heard someone called Social Services" he said leaving the statement open.

Chase nodded. "Was it you?" he asked sharply.

House had predicted that everyone would blame him. So he answered without shock "No, did you?"

Chase shook his head. He looked away is disgust. "Are you drinking? How long since your last Vicodin?" he asked both worried and disgusted.

House laughed. "Don't worry about me. Better question is who will continue the book for the kid?" he asked, diverting as usual.

Chase frowned but let it go for now. "I suppose that the right thing to do" he said firmly, then laughed to himself. "If there is a right thing amongst all this...fucked up...ness" he finished.

House smiled back before offering Chase some juice. "I still have your favourite" he said. It was a mark of kindness often not seen in House. Of course he wasn't as rough as he appeared. Chase merely got up and poured himself some juice. Another mark of kindness to the rough cripple.

"You'll do it then? I know its been on your mind since you found the book?" House called.

"Who else?" Chase said as if it was the most obverse thing in the world.

"I thought so. Come watch tv, I'll even let you pick." House offered.

AN: R and R as usual.
