She is cold and locked in darkness, her mind fogging and grinding almost to a complete halt. Nemu just wants to sleep, and never wake up again. It would be so easy, so very easy, and she is so tired.

Her bedraggled body spills through the soup of darkness and can't find bones and ligaments to stand up. This is probably the end, Nemu realizes.

She always suspected that she would die alone.

And somehow, Nemu can't see that there's anything wrong with that. It makes no difference as to whether she dies in the company of others.

Then, comes the whispering.

First, it's in the distance, quiet, indistinct, murmurs Nemu can't understand. But given time, it grows louder.

And louder.

The violent pain twists in her belly as it distends and screams against its bonds. Her body is changing, curling, burning.

What's happening? Nemu is so used to experimentation that she can identify nearly every surgical procedure Mayuri has ever performed on her by heart but can't identify this new, fresh pain. It's unlike anything she's ever experienced before.

Don't be afraid, little girl. The voice is serpentine and silky-smooth, and promises death in every syllable. The voice comes from everywhere and nowhere; Nemu knows it intimately yet it is a stranger.

You're just going to sleep now. Welcome to the dark.

Everything goes black.
