Caving In

Blue.

It was the only colour Lily could see all around her. The deep ultramarine skies descended upon the turbulent waters that mirrored the skies, making Lily feel like she was staring into infinity.

She's been robbed of sleep for the third night in row but she wasn't complaining, because Lily was happy to be floating in solitude. She had escaped her claustrophobic household to her father's childhood haunt; a little cottage by the beach at St Andrews in Scotland.

She inhaled deeply, allowing the sea salt to tingle her nostrils and giggling as little crabs skittered past her exposed toes.

Lily Evans really believed that she was happy; she wanted to be. But as she sat there alone in the dead of the night, her thoughts poked and prodded her out of her delusions and made her very aware of a very uncomfortable fact: she wasn't all that happy as she wanted to be.

She missed him with all her heart and she couldn't get her mind to stop conjuring images of the boy with the messy hair that she couldn't stop running her hands through, and the lopsided smile that made her blush from head to toe.

"Okay, that's it," she grumbled to herself as she picked herself off the sandy ocean bed. She cleaned herself off within seconds and jogged to her cabin, dressing up warmly.

Crack.

The heart wants what the heart wants, after all.

Lily landed outside the Potter's residence and found it pitch black except for a single light bulb that glowed brightly in the little upstairs room. Her heart swooped in excitement.

She shut her eyes tightly for a second and allowed the warmth of James' first kiss to envelope her. Lily grinned.

"Expecto Patronum!"

A silvery doe burst from the tip of her wand and she gasped, still excited by the spectral beauty of her patronus that was a silent promise of her everlasting love to James.

She'd rather swallow jellyfishes as opposed to ever saying such things out loud, but James knew it as well as she did and that's all she really cared about.

Lily turned around just as two strong arms caught her from behind and lifted her up in the air, causing her to gasp.

"You know, I saw you coming and swore that I wouldn't let myself be surprised this time, but you're impossible." She gently held James' arms as he set her back down on the grass. He just spun her around and hugged her tight, burying his face in her shoulders and twisting his arms around her waist. He nearly threw all his weight on her and she teetered unsteadily.

"Oof! James, you're heavy!"

It took James a minute to raise his head up.

"I've missed you, Lily!" He said huskily, looking earnestly into Lily's eyes.

She melted.

"I love you too, James."

She leaned in and lost herself in him, unwilling to resurface.
