A/N: A short little fic based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It would make a lot more sense (hopefully) if you know of it.

Orpheus

By: Dimhiriel Taralom

They called her Kikyo, most talented miko in decades. She was hailed as a heroine, a legendary figure who battled against demons. She always won…

…except once. Just once. But it killed her.

God, how much he hated her. On those stormy nights when rain lashed against his face and the cold seeped through his damp clothes into his bones, his shoulder would throb in a ghost of that first agonizing moment of wood tearing through muscle. Sometimes his fingers would brush over the spot of the wound before he realized what he was doing and pulled them back, but for a moment he could still feel a light scar at his fingertips, the only sign of betrayal and hurt and an arrow fired by a dying priestess lost in hatred.

He would learn of her own betrayal, of her hurt at the hands of a demon who had stolen his face. But that wouldn't be until later.

For now, he swore he would never look back.

--------

She called herself Kagome, a schoolgirl from a faraway, exotic land known as Toe-Key-Oh, where the only demons around had been christened Math and English. She was loud, clumsy, whiny, and wore the most indecent kimono he had ever seen in his life.

But in her face, he saw the gentle swell of Kikyo's cheek, the curve of her nose, the determination in her eyes.

Inuyasha looked back.

A/N: I'm not quite sure myself exactly what this story means. I simply know there is something inexplicably sad about it.
