Two Weeks
By: Amber LeBlanc
The dark figure sat in silent anticipation, waiting for what she knew was coming. Frustration graced her features. Pale, soft skin, electric blue eyes, and high cheek bones accompanied her pursed, thin lips. Limbs tightly knotted, she stared at the clock that seemed to move much slowly than it was supposed to. After what seemed like an eternity later, the clock struck twelve. She slowly stood and gazed around the room, quickly scanning for anything out of the ordinary. Fear struck her eyes when she caught sight of the strange lump in the corner. Time seemed to stop. The lump under the carpet rose until it was at the height of her knees. 'Shannon…' It hissed. The disembodied voice sent shivers down her spine. It suddenly disappeared as beads of sweat appeared on her forehead.
'no, not again…' she whispered in the silence as she gripped her arm in painful memory. The thing had started appearing 3 weeks ago, at the strike of midnight on a Tuesday night. The first time she saw it, she considered the fact that lack of sleep was causing hallucinations. When she had stood up to get advil, the thing attacked. It struck her in the leg, knocking her down. What she was really worried about though, was the fact that even though it hadn't hit hard, she was knocked down, her legs gashed down her whole shin. Whatever the supernatural thing was, it wasn't a force to be reckoned with. As she flinched waiting for the thing to strike again, it disappeared, only 2 minutes after it came. The same thing happened the next week, though she wasn't hurt because she knew what to expect. Now, on the third night, she would find out what it was.
It struck her down with such force, she cried out in pain. Quickly jumping up, She dodged the next blow by jumping on a table. She then jumped to the chair once it cracked the table in half. Huffing for breath, she took a hurried glance towards the clock, one more minute and it would disappear. The thing sped forward, knocking her on the ground as she rushed to get out of the way. 45 seconds. She stood up and ran to her dining room, the thing close behind her. Panic in her eyes as the thing started ganging on her, she picked up the closest thing--a wooden chair.30 seconds. With a rush of adrenaline, she threw the chair with as much force as possible at the thing. 15 seconds. It let out an angry hiss and sped forward, hitting her in the shin. Crying out in pain, she fell forward, gripping her leg in pain. 10 seconds. She braced herself for the next attack.
She couldn't move, the thing would get a direct hit at her head. She closed her eyes waiting for the thing to strike. Wincing, she prepared for the attack. The thing let out a satisfied hiss and moved forward. She could hear the carpet rustling, she thing was coming towards her. Her eyes snapped open when she heard an anguished cry. The thing had frozen in its tracks. She turned to the clock that hung on her wall, silently ticking. 12:02. The two minutes were over. With an infuriated growl, the ominous thing shrunk back into the carpet, disappearing. Sitting up slowly, Shannon breathed a sigh of relief, it was over for now. With a look of determination, she stood up, wincing slightly. She didn't get it this time, but next time, this would all end. 2 weeks…
