This is a one-shot I've left unfinished for a long time, just letting it rot in the vaults; upon finding it, I finished it. This is the end result.

Disclaimer: I don't own Detective Conan; Gosho Aoyama does.

"What will you do now, Kudou Shinichi-kun?"

I looked up; the mirror reflected one Haibara Ai leaning lazily against the doorframe, her arms folded across her chest and her legs keeping her propped up. Her lips were pursed, her face was blank, and her aquamarine eyes, though trained on me, were emotionless; her words came out in a low, dreary monotone, such as they usually did. I tore my gaze from the eight year old, turning it instead to my own reflection; I was me again. I was Kudou Shinichi; Conan Edogawa was gone for good. I grinned cheekily at the thought.

Returning my attention to Ai, I replied smoothly, confidence oozing from my words, "I'm going to be with Ran."

She closed her eyes, 'hmming' softly; after a long moment of silence, she muttered, "I thought you would say as much."

My eyebrows shot up as I inquired, "What do you mean by that?"

She waved her hand dismissively, a sign that the topic had been dropped; pushing herself off of the doorframe, she addressed me as she turned on her heels, "I'll be taking my leave now, Kudou-kun."

It was on impulse that I cried out, "Haibara, wait!"

"What is it," Ai paused, turning her head to glance back at me, "Kudou-kun?"

I swallowed hard, at a loss for words; why had I stopped her? I didn't know. Finally, with a faint blush staining my cheeks, I mumbled awkwardly, "t-Thanks. For everything."

It wasn't what I had wanted to say; she knew that as well as I did. She said nothing of the matter, though, only inclining her head politely in return; she took another step, and for the second time that night, I called after her, "Haibara-!"

"Let me go, Kudou-kun," Ai advised lightly, her tone kind and her manner gentle, "I am a double-edged blade; eventually, I will cut you. Be content with what you already have."

I watched, torn, as she walked away, but I did not stop her this time; as she vanished entirely from view, I acknowledged that, as Conan Edogawa, I had fallen in love with the ever-mysterious Haibara Ai. Turning my gaze back to the mirror, I smiled wryly; Kudou Shinichi smiled wryly back at me.

So, basically, the point of this one is that, even though they were one in the same, Conan Edogawa and Shinichi Kudou became their own persons. As such, Shinichi was in love with Ran, and Conan with Ai.

Do you guys get what I'm getting at? I don't.
