Prologue: Death in the Night
_Don't give up . . ._
The wind whistled through the silent, darkened streets of Tokyo, rustling a whirlwind of leaves through the air. Trees clattered their branches together like old ladies rubbing their bony, gnarled fingers. Somewhere in the distance, a hollowed shriek pierced the gloom. Not one soul dared to venture out into the darkness.
A figure with wavy aqua hair stared down through her window of her tenth story apartment, green eyes troubled. "Haruka . . ."
The blond-haired figure in the bed stirred and rolled over. "Hm?" she asked groggily, opening her sleep-clouded cobalt eyes.
Michiru's eyes flashed. "She's coming." Her white-fisted grip on the Deep Aqua Mirror tightened and her face paled ever so slightly.
Her soulmate yawned. "Who?"
Michiru's eyes darkened. "The Sorceress of Darkness. The woman prophesized to bring the Apocalypse on her wing and the chill of death with her eyes . . ."
Haruka's eyelids fluttered as she was drawn back towards sleep once more. "What are you talking about?" she yawned, rolling over again in a tangle of maroon silken bedcovers.
The guardian of the deep ocean spun around, hair whispering past her cheeks. "Madam Noirlumiere."
"Nore . . . leh . . ." Haruka muttered before the realization sank in. It snapped her awake like a cold shower and she bolted up in the twisted sheets, turning at the same time to face her love. Her eyes widened. "No. Not her."
Fear flickered in Michiru's eyes. "Yes . . . her."
"Oh my God . . ." Haruka bolted out of bed and raced to fold her soul mate into her arms. Michiru cowered in Haruka's embrace, whimpering like a scared puppy as frightened tears slid down her cheeks. Haruka paled. If Michiru -- her ever calm, dignified, level headed Michiru - was frightened, the situation was _very_ bad.
"Michiru . . . Michiru . . . it's alright," she murmured, stroking her hair comfortingly. Michiru hiccuped. "We're so much stronger than the last time we faced her . . ." the blond continued.
Michiru pulled back slightly and looked Haruka in the eyes with her own watery green ones, now red from crying. "Haruka . . . she's so powerful. She practically destroyed us the first time . . ."
Her eyes suddenly widened. "My God," she whispered. Her face paled, and she began to shriek. "The eyes," she screamed, "the EYES!"
"Michiru! MICHIRU!" Haruka cried frantically, grabbing her arms and shaking the hysterical girl. "What is it?!?!?"
The room seemed to darken. Behind Haruka, a pair of lights the color of blood glittered menacingly in the shadows.
The blond took no notice of the threat as her hysterical partner fell to her knees, quaking and crying. "Michiru! What IS it?!?"
A fountain of blood suddenly exploded out from Haruka's chest and a gurgling sound emitted from the blond' s throat. Michiru gave a blood- curdling scream as Haruka's still form collapsed on top of her, covering her in a river of red.
The eyes glittered once, and a triumphant cackle echoed through the air before the blackness covered all.
_End Prologue_
Author's Notes: Ooh, I got goosebumps writing that one! My first attempt at a truly scary story . . . or at least somewhat scary. No, I don't hate Haruka or Michiru, I love them both! I just pictured this scene and it seemed to fit. Stay tuned for more.
