Prologue
"Missed me?"
Chapter 1
The last three months I spent in Afghanistan training medics has led to this moment, the moment I can see his gorgeous face and that bleedin' smirk smiling back at me. He held the door open for me and gestured with his head for me to come inside. The cold spring wind was practically pushing me toward the doorway as I stepped forward. The second I walked back into that hall, I felt like I was back three months prior on our first date when he had managed to lure me back to his parents home. I heard the door close and without warning, he grabbed me by my hips and turned me around to face him; his lips on mine before I could even speak. It had felt like a lifetime had passed before we broke apart; resting our foreheads on each other catching our breath. Silence had consumed us as he looked down on me with a burning desire in his eyes; I just stared back daring not to be the first to break our new accustomed atmosphere. All I did was smile at him and he drew in a breath.
"You came back to me" he whispered to me.
"Of course I did. Did you ever doubt me?" I asked playfully.
The next thing I knew, he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder making his way to the stairs; making his intentions very clear to me. God, I have missed this man.
We had spent the rest of the afternoon in bed, getting reacquainted with each other again since our date. I laid there snuggled in the crook of his arm, resting my head on his chest listening to his heart beat a thousand beats per minute; trying to regain his breath from our little marathon. I looked around the room below us and saw the carnage that we made, from our clothes scattered on the floor to the furniture slightly out of place and disturbed. I started to think about what this all meant and what my relationship with Charles was since we hadn't really had the chance to talk about it yet.
"What's going on in that head of yours?" His spoke so softly yet he scared the hell out of me.
"I'm just thinking-" I replied.
"Oh, that does sound dangerous-" he retorted. I giggled at his remark but tried to cover it by playfully slapping him on the chest. "Okay okay, I'm sorry, but seriously what's wrong?"
"There's nothing wrong of such, just thinking about us...our relationship- " I answered as I sat up and turned to look at him. I lifted my hand to gesture between us, "I mean...what does this mean from us?"
He stayed quiet for a few seconds before looking me deeply in the eyes, grabbing both my hands and pulling me towards him. "I may not know what the future holds for us but one thing I know for certain is that I never what to let you go and I never want to leave this moment."
"Me neither," I whispered.
"However...Sam is going to be here any minute and I need to clean up the house."
With that, we both dragged ourselves out of bed to get dressed and clean up the mess we had made, along with the mess Charles had made in his renovations with the house.
Before I had even made it to the last step of the stairs, I heard the laughter of Sam; Charles' 8-year-old son. It had been so long since I had heard a child's laughter; it was a bittersweet moment but I wasn't going to let my tour in Afghanistan steal this beautiful moment in front of me. He was skipping down the hall still in his school uniform and carrying his school bag, after bursting through the front door; I caught him just as I made it to the ground floor.
"Molly!" He squealed.
"Hey, scamp. You've gotten so big since the last time I saw you."
"We talked last week though...on daddy's computer." He replied.
"I know, it just feels like a lifetime ago," I answered.
His eyes seemed to glisten with innocence before running off to find Charles.
"No running sam!" Her voice echoed through the hall. I turned to see Rebecca standing at the door like the icy queen she is.
I felt like I had no connection to her so I just turned away to find Sam and Charles. As I got further away from the front door and closer to Sam interacting with his dad, I hear Rebecca drop his bag at the door and slowly close the door as she ventured back out to leave.
I finally found the two James men messing around in the kitchen. Neither had noticed me yet so I stood at the doorway, witnessing Charles acting just as childish as Sam. They were playing tag while throwing flour at each other, Charles was standing in front of me while Sam stood opposite. Just as Sam threw his flour, Charles had ducked and the flour hit me right in the face. All I could do was shut my eyes and hold my hands up in the air while Sam stood sheepish waiting for his punishment and Charles bent over trying to hold his laughter in.
"Molly, I am so sorry! I didn't mean it, I was aiming for daddy but he ducked!" he said apologetically.
Right after he said that I ran towards the kitchen counter and grabbed some flour for myself and joined in the fight.
After our litter antics in the kitchen had ended, Charles had sent Sam upstairs to get cleaned up and dressed for dinner. As Sam left, Charles grabbed my hand and pulled me to him. He just looked at me for a while staring at me with his dark brown beautiful eyes.
"What?" I asked.
"You. Sam. I couldn't be happier than I am right now. The three of us, its like we're a family and being with you; I found love where it wasn't supposed to be." He declared proudly.
"I love you too," I whispered.
