Yes, I did it again. I changed the story and turned it into something else. But I'm happy with this version and the story I have in mind.
This is a Edward/OC story with the OC replacing Bella. Well, she's Bella in a way but a different Bella. And that's not the only difference with the Canon story.
I hope you like this, tell me what you think!
Summary: A journal entry. A wish. And now, Izzy is suddenly Bella Swan. But with the differences in the story that she decided. But she doesn't remember she has ever been anyone else but Bella Swan. How will the story we know change?
Disclaimer:I'll say this only once. I don't own Twilight or any of its characters. I'd like to own Edward though... sadly it's not something possible. And of course I don't gain money while writing this story.
Prologue
Izzy looked curiously at the leather-bound journal she had found in the attic that morning. She was pretty sure she had never seen it before. In fact, she would almost suspect that it hadn't been there before that day. But that was ridiculous. There were so many things in that attic that the journal had probably just been hidden underneath other things and then it had just turned up today after her mother had decided to tidy up and reorganize the attic.
The journal came with a fountain pen, looking very old and fancy. The journal itself was obviously old as well, the both of them probably dated from the end of 1800's.
Izzy shrugged and figured she would keep it for herself. She wasn't one to keep a journal but she liked writing, not only original stories but also make up ways in which she could change the plots and characters of the books she read. A little bit like fanfiction but without actually writing fanfiction.
Dear Diary, Izzy wrote because one would usually start a journal (or diary) like that, right? She wasn't an expert in the matter.
Today I finished reading the Twilight saga. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in it because I actually liked it but, I have to admit, something was missing, something that would have made me really love it. It was the protagonist's voice. Bella Swan. There was something lackluster and bland about her character that made everything else seem a little dull as well, because it was written from her POV.
The problem with Bella was the fact that nothing stood out about her and yet, everyone was enamored with her anyway. A little like a Mary-Sue. People loved her, nobody really hated her (and I'm not talking about Victoria because she was a villain, I'm talking about people from her school. Lauren and Jessica would have been the perfect choices for school rivals but it was never explored. In fact, most of the secondary characters were never fully fleshed out.)
I can't help but think of another character from another vampire book saga. Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries. She was beautiful and popular but she was far from perfect. Her personality was strong and, even if she had flaws like vanity, you couldn't help but root for her, maybe because of these flaws. They made her relatable. And her school rival, Caroline, was also an interesting character on her own, a little like Blair Waldorf.
Even Edward, Twilight's love interest, though he was a complex character with very decisive traits in his personality (and not all of them perfect), through Bella's eyes, he looked a little boring.
I just wished the main character had been different. And a little bit of the story as well.
That's what I would have changed (and I'm going to use myself as an example because I'm pathetic like that).
But, first, I need to explain a few things about myself. My name is Isabella – yes, I share the name of the main character –, though the people that knows me called me Izzy. I would have loved to be called Bella, but nobody that actually does, does it as a compliment, they usually call me 'Bella' (as in, beautiful) to mock me.
I'm not beautiful, or popular, and I have very few friends.
I have light blonde hair, sea blue eyes and skin as pale as porcelain, which, on paper, would be enough to make me beautiful, like my mother.
Unfortunately, I'm also seriously overweight, with oily hair and skin, severe acne and with thick glasses that covered my – otherwise – pretty eyes.
Now, I'm not saying this to be pitied. Though I can't say I don't care. I pretend that my brain is enough but when you're in high school and looking like I do, you can't help but care. When your peers look at you like you're dirt under their shoes, when they laugh and mock you in gym class, when they trip you when you walk, when they fill your locket with shaving foam, or write with a bold red market on it 'pig', when they invent more innovative ways to torment you every day, you can't help but care.
But that is not the point. The point is that, a story like mine would be the perfect beginning, or at least, the perfect background for the main character.
Bella, while she's in Phoenix, is not popular. The author doesn't really explain why but you can surmise that it's because she's shy and withdrawn. It has little to do with her appearance. Which would have been interesting if she had evolved from those characteristics once she had moved to Forks. But she doesn't. She remains the same shy and withdrawn person during all the four books.
Isn't the point of the story for the characters to grow, change and evolve?
So that's how I would do it.
Instead of Bella moving to live with her father when the Cullens are already there, it's the Cullens that move when Bella is already there. She has been living with her father for a year, in fact. But not in Forks, Washington, where it's rainy and cold. Instead, let's say that the town is still called Forks but it's in California instead and the town is a little like Neptune from Veronica Mars, where the rich people live in a particular zip code (like the 09 in Veronica Mars) and they rule both the school and the town. Charlie is not rich like the others (but he still lives in a pool mansion who he inherited from his parents, and this mansion is in the rich people's zip code) but he's the Chief of Police of the town and that gives him (and Bella by extension) a certain kind of privilege.
Though Bella is rich on her own because her mother's new husband is a younger than her mother, very rich (Phil makes 25 million a year) and famous baseball player, so that plus Charlie being the Chief of Police, is enough to include her in the rich part of Forks' population.
Her first year of high school was spent in Phoenix. And it wasn't pretty. She was bullied for her appearance. Until, at the end of her freshman year, she decides that enough is enough and she decides to change, improve her appearance. Like Hanna Marin in Pretty Little Liars, she goes, in one summer, from ugly duckling to beautiful swan.
She moves to Forks her sophomore year. There, she joins the cheerleading team, as a flyer, (not dress code for the uniform or even for the clothes they decide to wear at school, at least when it comes to the rich students who can basically do whatever they want) and, by the end of September, she becomes the most popular (and beautiful) girl at school. She has two frenemies, Lauren and Jessica (who both comes from rich families and they are both beautiful and spoiled), who hang with her because they live off Bella's popularity, but they are also jealous of her because the guys they like – Mike and Tyler – have both crashes on Bella.
But Bella is far from perfect. Her sudden beauty and popularity have changed her. She was shy and withdrawn before, only interested in books and classical music (Bella in Twilight used to play the piano but she gave up on it when she was little but since I know how to play the violin instead, I'll go with the violin.) Bella used to play the violin until she arrives in Forks and she soon stops practicing every day like she used to. Now the violin – a very expensive Stradivari – is in her room, mostly gathering dust.
Though she's very smart, she pretends to be an airhead because that's just something expected of a cheerleader. A cheerleader is not supposed to be obsessed with school and grades like Bella used to be. So now, she barely scrapes by, often pretending not to know the answers in class when called upon and actually deliberately giving wrong answers to class tests so that she's not accused of being a teacher's pet or a nerd.
She also became the opposite of shy. In fact, she became vain, conceited and obsessed with her looks – but in reality, that's just a façade that stems from still deep-rooted insecurities – and she craves attention (especially from boys and men. She's a tease – and dresses (and behaves) a little like a slut – but she's also a virgin, though she uses her virginity as a weapon, making guys think they can have her if they try hard enough but, in reality, having no intention of losing her virginity with any of these guys), even going so far as being a little of an exhibitionist (she's also a Instagram star with millions of followers, and that's because she posted tons of videos and photos with her in bikini or other skimpy clothes and suggestive and seductive poses).
And since this is the Twilight world, beside having Bella's power of shield, she also has another power. She's very persuasive. She can convince people to do what she wants. Part of that comes from being beautiful and seductive, having a natural allure (like the vampires who have 'dazzling' abilities) but it's more than that. Which will result in her, once she becomes a vampire, being able to compel people (like in the Vampire Diaries).
Enter Edward, who is a bit of a snob, a bit judgmental. He can read minds so his opinion of most humans is – somewhat justified – not a good one. Edward is also arrogant, a little controlling and possessive. And old-fashioned (no sex before marriage). He's fastidious, like Mr Darcy, never having found a girl he has ever been interested in.
Like in Twilight, Edward can't read Bella's mind (and Bella is still Edward's singer but in a different way than in Canon. He craves her, like Matthew craves Diana in 'A Discovery of Witches'.)
(Also, vampires can walk in the sun if they have special rings, like in the Vampire Diaries, that protect them from the sun – they still sparkle in this but the rings create an illusion so that humans don't realize they sparkle in the sun. Also, the venom is only present in their blood so that a human become a vampire only by ingesting vampire blood – though they don't need to die and it still takes three days after ingesting the blood for the transformation to be complete, and it burns like in Twilight. That means that vampire bites don't turn humans into vampires. Also, vampires can use their 'dazzle' to make people forget things, like the fact that they were bitten by a vampire. The bite causes pleasure if done right. It's a sexual thing. Also, their eye-color is golden only as long as they are drinking animal blood and red as long as they are drinking human blood but it returns to their human color normally – green for Edward – but much brighter – almost glowing – and their eyes become black when they're really thirsty.)
How could these two people, who, it seems, have nothing in common and wouldn't appreciate the other much, fall in love? But I guess, that would be the fun part, finding out. Exploring the story.
Of course, I would love to be this Bella Swan. But without actually remembering the fact that Twilight is actually a book saga, or that I know who the Cullens are or the fact that they are vampires. I would love to be this Bella Swan and believing I was actually this Bella Swan, like this is actually and has always been my life.
I would love to wake up tomorrow morning as this Bella Swan but without realizing that anything is different.
Izzy closed the journal and sighed, feeling stupid and pathetic. But sometimes it was nice, imagining that you could have a different life from the one you lived. She knew that living in a fantasy was not healthy but she still couldn't stop. It was soothing because these fantasies of hers were able to take her way from her, not very pleasant, life.
Still, it was time to sleep now. She put the journal on her bedside table, turned off the light and in minutes she was asleep. She didn't notice the journal glowing and then disappear soon after.
