Unfaithful

Sam sneaks out of the room with a last look at Dean lying awkwardly on the bed. His body is splayed out like someone not used to lying down. Not used to a bed. Dean says he doesn't remember what Hell was like. Sam knows only thing for certain. It didn't have beds.

It's his brother's first night back from Hell.

And Sam is leaving to meet a demon.

Irony doesn't get any sweeter than this.

He gets in the car without looking back. Ruby's smile is small and slick. Sam is used to it. He is used to her. A weird twist happens inside him. Who he's not used to is Dean.

It's not true he tells himself on the next breath. This is Dean. It's good. It's amazing. It's a fucking miracle.

"Sammy, you okay?"

Sam turns at her voice. That little grating runs up his spine at her use of that nickname. Doesn't belong to her. And she'd stopped using it. One look from him when Dean was gone had been enough to stop her cold. Figures his brother's been back less than twenty-four hours and out it slips from her lips again. Because the rivalry is back.

The cheating.

His heart pounds. Is that what this is? Sam has never been unfaithful in his life. Yet right now. Right here. He knows exactly what it feels like to cheat on someone.

"I'm fine. Just tired. Let's just get there and do it already."

It's for the greater good. Dean wouldn't understand. Dean has enough on his mind just trying to figure out how it is he's breathing again. Alive. Sam allows himself a moment to let it in. Feels his brother's breath on his face in that room. The strength of Dean's arms around him. Ruby, squirming behind them awkwardly.

On cue she pipes in, "You know we gotta do this, right?"

He swipes at his hair, feeling the breeze from the open window touch his forehead before his hair flops back down. "Yeah. I know. It's just … I left Dean alone."

"He'll be fine. Sleeping. It's not easy adjusting to a body again after … take a little … never mind. I'm just saying don't worry. We'll be back before he wakes up. And there'll be a few less demons for him to worry about."

Sam nods in response. Sees out of the corner of his eye that she looked at him briefly before returning her eyes to the road. Her small smirk is back in place. Fuck. This isn't cheating. And he's not feeling guilt. He's doing this for Dean.

The waitress demon's arrogance plays in his mind. Mind your tone with me, boy. I'll drag you back to hell myself. And that. Can not happen. Sam can't let it happen. He glances again at Ruby, she turns toward him, eyes questioning but he quickly looks away. He's sitting in a car with a demon on the way to kill other demons. He's going to use powers that betray Dean to his very core.

He can't say he's never been unfaithful any more.

Another chip of what was once Sam flaking away and drifting into the night fog.

"I'm going to make them pay."

Ruby turns again to him, brows raised. "Hell yeah, Sammy."
