Nighttime Visits
Oneshot
He really didn't understand it. It was all stupid, just something to do, he guessed. Something entertaining, something that he could do just to get away from demons at night that always seemed drawn to him. A thing to pass time. Maybe something he did just so he could blackmail Kagome in the future...
Inuyasha didn't know why he was lying to himself. He stared at the sleeping girl in the bed in front of him, watching her slow breaths and peaceful face. Every night, around midnight, he would leave his time period, the feudal era, to watch Kagome sleep. Usually he would ignore the nagging voice in the back of his head, that always seemed to love torturing him with questions he would prefer to avoid. Questions like 'what's so special about Kagome sleeping? Why did he like it so much? Was he falling in l-'
Inuyasha shook his head abruptly, dropping his eyes to Kagome's face. There was some magic about it he couldn't exactly explain. The way Kagome's chest rose and fell.. The way her murmurs of nonsense made Inuyasha wonder what she was dreaming about. The way her long, black hair spilled over the side of the bed, free for Inuyasha to stroke with trembling fingers. He didn't love her, he told himself. He'd never love again. Not after Kikyo. Not after he found out what a mess love could really make. It wasn't worth the trouble it came with.
And yet...
Inuyasha folded his arms, sliding down into a sitting position. He leaned in close enough just to feel Kagome's breath on his cheek, then moved back and sighed. Who cared that he watched her sleep? What did it really matter? No one would ever find out. He could ignore the questions and just let himself enjoy it.
Kagome moved, suddenly, and Inuyasha jumped back quickly. But she had not awoken. He stared at her still face, and then her lips parted slightly.
"Inuyasha," she whispered. Was she awake? He prepared himself to leap out the window, when Kagome's whispers continued. His heart leapt. "I.. I..."
"You what Kagome?" he whispered out loud. He took a step towards her sleeping form.
"I love you..." she whispered, and turned on her side, facing away from him. Inuyasha's eyes tripled in size. He rushed over to her, resting his hand on her side. She did not stir.
"Kagome?? You love me??" He waited for her to open her eyes and go 'I got you that time Inuyasha!' But she remained still. Her eyes stayed closed, and her breathing remained normal. Inuyasha blinked slowly.
"Damn, why does everything have to be so hard?" he muttered. Finally he stood up, ready to leave. He would need sleep for tomorrow's journey, when he would argue with Kagome as usual and pretend he didn't care about the glares she sent in his direction. Act as if she was nothing but a weak human for him to protect.
He put a hand on the window sill, then looked back at her. All lies... but at least now, when no one was awake to listen, he could let the truth out for a little while.
"I love you too," he finally whispered. Then he leapt into the night, as agile as a cat.
Kagome sat up slowly and stared out the window at the moon. Her lips formed a soft smile before she curled up in her bed and fell back asleep, her dreams proof of the hidden feelings she shared with the half-demon.

It's just something I wanted to write. I think its cute, but reviews would be much appreciated.
