Shaikamaru stared lazily up at the cottony clouds floating through the crisp, clear blue sky. He had been watching them since dawn, after quickly and quietly escaping from his home before his mother woke up and made him what she called "breakfast". He shuddered at the thought. For some reason, his thoughts turned on the troublesome female sand ninja that had recently been back to Konoha to inform their Hokage, Tsunade, of the rules for the renewal of thepeace treaty between them and Suna. His brow furrowed as he tried to remember her name.
She had four gravity defying blonde pigtails, sharp clear sea-green eyes, and an ever-present smirk that matched her attitude. He had fought her during the finals of the Chunin Exams, and remembered how eager she was to get the battle started. Her energy and determination had somewhat annoyed him then, he never did like the "perky" ones, but sadly, he was forced to admit that it had saved his sorry butt before. Somehow they always were put together, and he had grown something akin to respect for the irritating ninja.
Then, it suddenly hit him what the troublesome woman's name was.
Temari.
The troublesome sand-nin's name was Temari. Temari was the one with the sun kissed hair and deep green eyes. Temari was the one with the enthusiastic attitude and trade-mark smirk. Temari was the one who was currently trotting on his mind.
Shikamaru's eyes widened by a fraction of an inch, as realization came crashing down.
He loved Temari after their few (but memorable) moments together. No, he thought, quickly catching himself, he did not love her, it was simply an… an attraction that had grown… that had grown completely and utterly beyond his control. Yes, that was what it was. A simple infatuation, simple puppy love, nothing more. It would end soon and he could get on with his uninteresting life as if he had never known her. Although secretly, he wished it wouldn't.
He pushed himself up from the soft grass with a small smile gracing his features as hues of fiery oranges and violets began to the smear the sky as evening approached. Yes, he would let this little "infatuation" last a little longer. So Shikamaru stood up, with Temari's triumphant smile on her sharp face in his head, and began to walk lazily down the hill towards home, where his mother would serve him what she called "dinner".
