Tortallan Chess Set.
He made it – carving each piece and delicately painting the fragile figures. The board was large and the pieces stood tall and proud. They were the finest of Tortall. The best chess set.
The black side were the monarchy and council; Tortall's most powerful and influential nobles and advisors.
The Monarchs
The King and Queen were resplendent in fine clothes that seemed to ripple – their eyes were dancing and merry; you could almost hear the laughter bubbling up and over spilling. Their crowns seemed to shine and sparkle with richness beyond his comprehension.
The Bishops
Next to the King was the Prime Minister, standing tall and proud with a small mischievous smile that reminded people of the boy before the man. By the Queen's sideher smiling guard and commander stood proudly with the rearing horse emblem displayed prominently on her chest.
The Knights
At the Prime Minister's side stood the legendary King's Champion, bright in gold and red; hair flaming wearing her customary frown of concentration. Beside the Rider commander stood the Knight Commander of the King's Own smiling and dazzling in the blue and silver of his office.
The Rooks/Castles
Next to the King's Champion was His Majesty's confidential agent dressed to impress with a wicked grin and a cheery twinkle men get when eyeing their lady. The King's uncle stood beside the Knight Commander, slightly bent but with a noble bearing that showed his rank and history as one of Tortall's best.
The Pawns
In front of the confidential agent stood a Dragonet, with a laughing expression and shimmering blue scales. Beside her stood the Wildmage smiling with a host of animals peeking from her clothing. Next stood the Horse Mistress for the Queens Riders, standing tall in her uniform with high ranking rings. In front of the King's Uncle a basilisk stood daintily holding his tail. Beside him came a mage resplendent and grinning in his black robe. Next to him stood the Rider Trainee Master, wearing his uniform proudly. In front of the Queen stood the Lord Provost with a noble bearing that belied his ancestry. In front of the King stood his Spymaster, sober and friendly in clothes not befitting his rank.
The white army were the ones who thwarted them.
The Back line was faceless men standing tall under their countries flags. The Pawns were the immortals that wracked the land.
In games sometimes WHITE wins and sometimes BLACK and so too in life.
He smiled as he set the chess armies against one another in the window and as day after day children pressed their noses against the window to gaze at the figures; black always won.
