He had been in denial of it ever since becoming close to the other boy, but now that the day was finally upon them he had to take notice of it.
A, his one and only friend in this world, was going to die today.
It has been weighing so heavily on his mind that he had not been able to get a good night's worth of sleep for the entire week thus far. And now that today was the day he vowed to remain at A's side and do his best to stop whatever fate had in store for him.
Perhaps it was foolish of him to even try and stop something he saw as absolute, but to idly stand by and watch him die…
So here he was, at A's side for the day and watching out for every possible danger. And naturally A saw this strange shift in Beyond's behavior, but seeing how B was nothing but strange it went unmentioned between the two.
The day went by smoothly and soon it was evening. And so Beyond was relaxing, something he would soon find to be his greatest mistake.
The two of them were reading in the lounge when Beyond began drifting off. No more than a few hours could have passed before he awoke, finding himself alone in the room.
"What-? A?"
Panic overtook him and he was suddenly on his feet, racing throughout Wammy's House in a desperate search for his friend.
This search of his did not last long, as he soon found A in his room. Hanging there. Motionless. Dead.
"No…"
It felt as if Beyond had the air stolen from him at that moment and became entirely useless. Tears began flowing from his eyes as he choked on their bitterness. It's been years since he's cried…
"No." The word was forced out yet again and again, his tone rising with each time. Soon he found himself shouting it as if he could change the events by just denying it all.
Hands then appeared and started to pull him away from the scene. As if it really mattered if he saw this or not, already having his mind fully wrapped around the concept of death.
Days passed and A's body was lowered into the ground, marked with a blank headstone. Now there was no more denying it and no more changing the past.
"I'm stupid…" to think he could stop fate.
"This is his fault…" A didn't want to become L, but would never admit it to anyone but his dear friend Beyond.
"I hate him. If he didn't exist…" but those words should have been about himself, not L.
Suddenly a wild laughter poured from Beyond's mouth, flowing out and becoming lost in the cold winter air. No one would hear it, this final break of sanity.
This was the end. Not only for A, but for B as well. They were only puppets after all, created by Wammy's and to be used for L. But now that these tools were broken, they no longer had a use or place in the world.
So this was the end for him. But only the beginning of the challenge he would bring to L.
