When Caroline bent down to pick up the envelopes she dropped on the floor, she noticed that the one on top bared a seal that was all too familiar to her. She knew that seal from when she received the invitation to the Mikaelson Family Ball, all those years ago. As she opened the envelope, her heart began to beat slightly faster because she was intrigued as to what Klaus would be writing her about. However, she would deny the fact that she felt anything but surprise when she read the contents of the letter. When she realized that he had sent a check, she smirked at the idea that he was trying to buy her affections. "Doesn't he know her better than that?" She mused to herself. However, as she read the letter inside, she began to realize his true intentions; he was actually being noble and generous. This made her smile slightly as she continued reading his remarks, but her heart nearly skipped a beat when she read the final words of the letter.

"I do look forward to thanking you in person, someday...

However long it takes.

Yours, Klaus "

Those four words echoed in her mind as she recalled the first time he spoke them to her. It seems like a lifetime ago that they had had that discussion on the day of her high school graduation.

"Tyler is now free to return to Mystic Falls." Klaus spoke with

Caroline, slightly confused and taken aback by Klaus's generosity, "What?"

Klaus continued, "He's your first love. (Pausing) I intend to be your last, however long it takes."

Back then, she was amused and slightly flattered by his, not particularly subtle advances. But now, so much has changed since then. So much in fact, that she could hardly remember who she was, a recent high school graduate who was excited by the prospect of going to college and having new experiences. Now, she had been through so much that the problems she faced back then, seemed trivial now. She had become such a stronger person than she ever thought she could be.

But she knew that Klaus had seen it all those years ago. He always saw how headstrong she was and knew that she would someday become a strong, independent woman. That probably was one of the reason he "fancied" her so much. Because she wasn't like everyone else.

The more she focused on the last part of the letter, the more excited she became by the possibilities of a future. When Stefan died, she thought that all she had to focus on and care about was the school for the twins and other gifted children. Sure, she had contemplated stopping by New Orleans in a few years or decades to drop in on Klaus, for old time sake. But, she never actually had seriously considered it and never in her wildest dreams did she really think he still meant what he said all those years ago. She chuckled to herself, "He never gives up does he?" But she smiled like the ideas of possibilities. And what the future might hold.

For Caroline Forbes.

Or perhaps, maybe one day, Caroline Mikaelson.
