Hermione didn't look up as she heard someone stumbling down the stairs. The unevenness of the steps and the loud yawn that accompanied them left her in no doubt of who it was; she just didn't know why they were there.

"Oh. Where's Harry?" Ron said through another yawn as he reached the common room and looked around. He walked round the chairs and bent low to see under the table.

"He's not hiding. They left ages ago; they're probably in the Room of Requirement," Hermione said, still not looking up from her book.

"Okay. When you say "they", you mean Harry and-"

"Ginny. Yes," Hermione replied as she yawned behind her hand.

"Urgh, I don't see why they can't be more private. Why does everyone want to see them together all the time, it's disgusting-"

"Ron, they are in private. It's past midnight now, nobody asked you to go and watch them. I don't know why it annoys you so much."

Ron frowned and went to sit in the armchair next to Hermione's. He sat cross legged in the chair and leaned forward to see what book she was reading. It was in Ancient Runes.

"Ron, what are you doing?" Hermione asked, exasperated.

"I'm just looking! How do you read that stuff, anyway?"

"I'm not reading the runes, it's English inside, see?"

"Oh. Okay." Ron looked around, raised his eyebrows, smiled and moved slightly closer to Hermione.

"Seriously, Ron, what are you doing?" she said, finally looking up at him. Suddenly, but gently, he moved forwards to close their lips together. Hermione almost pulled away, but relaxed and returned the kiss gradually. It seemed to last forever, but it wasn't long enough.

When they had broken apart, Ron's eyes widened and he looked panicked, "Hermione, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean- "

"It's okay," she smiled. "I'm not sorry."
