It was weird.

Ruka was so, absolutely sure that this wasn't how it was meant to go. As he watched Mikan and Natsume argue with each other for the millionth time that day. At least, he was pretty sure.

It wasn't like them arguing with the odd part. No, they did that often enough that people have already stopped watching and/or trying to stop them. The odd thing was that they just seemed to be arguing for the sake of it and they seemed to be having fun.

Or Mikan seemed to be having fun, which was definitely weird as she was normally the one taking the argument to heart. Natsume on the other hand felt every argument with her was amusing although time-consuming. So the fact that Mikan was having fun stumped Ruka and all he could do was ask himself why?

It wasn't an odd fight either, it was about Natsume calling Mikan 'Polka-Dots' (which, although Ruka wouldn't tell his best friend, was getting rather tiresome and Ruka though Natsume should grow up a little and stop using the same insult over and over) and this was such a usual occurrence that Ruka was even surprised Mikan started fighting over it. Of course, she had every other time so Ruka wasn't sure why he thought this time might be different.

He bit his lip, it was rather worrisome. He hadn't much minded when it was just Natsume enjoying the fights because he was certain that Mikan still hated his raven-haired friend but if Mikan was enjoying them…what did this mean for Ruka? It wasn't like he didn't want Mikan to start warming up to Natsume, that wasn't his major problem but he didn't want her to start getting close with the boy.

While he wanted what was best for Natsume, he had to draw the line somewhere right? Sure, Natsume fancied her, maybe even felt more strongly towards her but so did Ruka and should Natsume get everything?

Ruka instantly chastised himself (silently, of course). He couldn't believe he had for a second thought that Natsume got everything, what with the hell the boy had been put through since entering that school. He had to grudgingly admit that Natsume did deserve Mikan but it still didn't make it seem very fair.

Sure, Natsume may have needed her more than Ruka would ever need her but Ruka loved her and he could give her anything she asked for. Hell! He was already helping her with her schoolwork and lending her rabbits when she needed them and just being a shoulder to cry on (although she dribbled and drooled which was rather disgusting) so why should he go through all the work to get close to her and then just give her to his best friend…not that she was a material possession he could just give away…or anything…

Out of the corner of his brain he registered that someone was screaming his name. Snapping himself back to reality he stared at the person who was screaming, who happened to be Mikan. Natsume had picked her up and was walking down the road with her. When Ruka asked what he was doing, Natsume shrugged and said that she was being bothersome and it was better if she was further away.

Ruka sighed; he saw no point in pointing out that by moving her away physically you're still very close to her because he knew that Natsume just was making up an excuse to hold her close to him. He walked next to his best friend, not lifting a finger to help Mikan because it wasn't something he would do when she was in no real danger, because he knew Natsume would never hurt her.

At least that was some condolence…
