Don't Own. Don't Sue.
A broken man stumbled in the door. The dog rushes to greet him. Sara's dog. Jumping and licking, whining for his mistress. He remembered how he hadn't wanted the dog. He'd only agreed after Sara had pleaded. How could he have said no to those big hopeful eyes?

He'd never see those eyes again. Never see them brighten with a smile or cloud in passion.

He slid down the closed door, tears streaking through the dirt that still covered his face. After wrapping his arms around the dog's neck, he buried his face in Bruno's neck and sobbed out his broken heart.

The rain pounding, lightening flashing, illuminating the broken car. Her hand is just visible, unmoving, so unnaturally still for his Sara. He screams her name as he jumps from the truck. Running, sliding through the mud. Clutching her hand, begging her to be okay. Relief as he hears her whisper his name. Her voice is so quiet, so faint. She says she loves him. Then she goes quiet.

Holding her hand as the car is lifted off of Sara's broken body. Clutching it as the ambulance speeds towards the hospital. Telling her everything will be okay. Knowing it's a lie even as the words leave his mouth. Knowing deep in his heart that it was hopeless. Natalie would never let her live.

His Sara, his life, was gone.

This is for Jess. She nagged all summer so I finally 'bit the bullet' and wrote something. I had to write it to get over my fear of it coming true. There's another, happier one in the works!
