The ringing was back. It seemed to happen every time, no matter what he did. He tried earplugs, but they only worked so well. They blocked out both the good sounds and the bad ones. So it was back to the drawing board again.
"Oishi."
Earmuffs didn't work either, because they only blocked out so much sound, and the ringing still would come. And those heavy-duty industrial ones worked even better than the earplugs did, if you didn't want to hear anything. No one did ever ask how he had gotten a pair of the ones they usually used out on the tarmac at the airport, and he wasn't about to tell.
"Oishi."
So what was he supposed to do now? Live with the ringing? Would he eventually lose his hearing? He didn't want that, so it seemed that there was only one solution to keep that from happening.
"Eiji, next time you're wearing a gag."
