How the Jester got His Name
She scrunched her nose as she looked him up and down. He had bed-draggled blond hair and cold grey eyes that looked at her innocently. The innocent look softened the color and warmed his ruddy skin.
"He looks funny." she said to her mother. Quietly loudly, too, one might add.
"Shush, Jane." her mother said, hushing her daughter.
"But it's true!"
"Shush!"
The five-year old Jane glared at the blond boy standing in front of her from behind her mother's skirts. He looked shyly up at her with stormy grey eyes.
"Be nice." her mother warned.
Little Jane made a face and folded her arms as she turned back to the odd boy. Her bright red hair showed her feisty behavior quite well and her green-eyes sparked, adding to her fiery personality.
"I've lived here my whole life. I know the whole palace." Jane bragged. "Do you know the whole palace?"
The blond shook his head.
"Come on, I'll show you."
Her mother said she should be polite. He was new, after all, and he needed a friend. But Jane could not see herself and this skinny boy being friends. He looked wimpy and she did not want a wimpy friend. She wanted strong friends.
"This is the garden. All the fruits and vegetables go to the kitchen." Jane said. "The Gardeners work here. They're very nice."
"Jane! Jane!" squeaked a boy as he ran over to her and the odd boy. "You'll never guess the good news?"
"What good news?"
"My grandfather is taking me on as an apprentice!"
"That's great news, Rake." Jane cheered.
"Who's this?" Rake asked, pointing to the odd boy standing slightly behind his friend.
"This is uh… What did you say your name was?"
The blond was about to say something but was stopped by someone shouting: "Watch out! The tomatoes are flying!"
The three looked up to see tomatoes soaring from a basket over to them.
Rake covered his head and ducked. Jane squeaked and stumbled over her feet, falling back on her behind. She squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the tomatoes to hit… but they never came.
Jane slowly opened up her eyes and saw the odd boy juggling all seven of them.
"How do you do that?" she asked, amazed.
"Practice." he answered. "Lots and lots of practice."
She blinked.
"Is everyone alright?" Mr. Gardener asked. His head popped up over the bushes, blinking at the sight of the new boy juggling the ripe tomatoes. "My goodness gracious." He breathed as he walked over with the basket. One by one, the blond boy tossed the tomatoes gently into the whicker basket.
"I think you have earned your title." Jane said, smiling at the blond boy. "From now on, we'll all call you: Jester!"
Short, sweet and adorable.
For those wondering about the "blond" spelling: No it is not a typo or an error. Blond without an "e" at the end is masuline. Blonde with an "e" is feminine. The same goes for brunet and brunette. Brunet is masculine and brunette is feminine. These are often mistakes made by authors that many do not know of. I am simply spreading my knowledge,
