Odin Went Walking
One day Odin went walking
(our Gods used to walk among us in those days,
those long ago days)
He walked through the forest
and from the ash and the elm
made the first man and the first woman.
Into them he breathed a spark
of Himself, so that Humanity is ever close to
the Divine.
Odin kept walking
and came to the Tree that connects
all worlds.
He tied himself to the branches
and from that Tree
drew all the knowledge of the worlds.
He gave it to the poet
who wooed his love
He gave it to the king
who won a mighty battle
He gave it to the first farmer
as he put those first few seeds into
the yet untested soil
(in these days we know
that from the seed comes all food.
In those days
they did not).
Odin went back home,
but every now and then
Odin goes walking.
Did you not know?
That fellow at the bar, with a patch over one eye,
draped in blue, a beer in his hand,
that's Odin gone walking.
