It was funny, how sometimes life could flash in front of you.
But at the same time, it wasn't. The thing about this was that in certain cases, it was actually amusing. And in others, it wasn't. Such as one of those heart-stopping moments where you're convinced that you're going to die, and then, all of a sudden, you're ok. Or one of those moments when you know you're going to die if no one comes to save you, and you're not sure anyone will.
Now, he thinks, is definitely one of the latter.
Olivia shows up, just like she always does, anxious and worried, because hey, he's her partner and some kid went and shot him. Never mind the fact that it wasn't anywhere serious, just his arm, but then, it could have been more. One bailiff didn't make it, and neither did the judge and someone else is touch and go. But he's ok, and so is Munch, and sooner or later, Fin will be around, because he's as worried as Olivia, though not as obvious.
One squad, one heartbeat, but what happens when one stops?
Let me call Kathy, says Olivia, but Elliot shakes his head. He's been thinking about it (or rather, avoiding thinking about it) for the past two weeks. And when Olivia asks, he answers. She filed for divorce, he says, and she knows he means to leave her out of it. Nothing more is said about it. Olivia proceeds to fill him in on what's happening now. She doesn't notice that he doesn't really care. He does, but at the same time, it doesn't seem to matter.
Suicide is a sin, he'd said once, and Rebecca Hendrix had retorted, so is divorce.
It isn't him, though, or rather, it's not what he wants, it's her. She's the one who walked, not him. If he had any more chances left, he'd do it all over. But now he has a sharp pain in his arm, and too much time to think. Olivia changes the subject and talks briefly about Munch, smirking when she mentions where he was shot, and he can't help but do the same.
In a moment, he thinks, everything can change.
Fits with the life flashing in front of his eyes again, he muses. Twenty years, just like that, all because of a bunch of papers. Screw it, he thinks, not what I need to think about. He hears Olivia's cell phone ring and knows it's not supposed to be on, but he says nothing. She casts him an apologetic look and leaves. He closes his eyes and drifts off. And when he wakes up, the one he found himself dreaming about is there.
Once again, he finds his life flashing before his eyes.
