Chapter 1: Everything goes to h-e double hockey sticks

Max POV

"Max, can we talk?"

Four words was what it took to throw me off my train of thought, which was actually planning some important pit stops on the rest of our journey to save the world. After all, after saving my mom from the hands of the deep sea ocean? Not an option to stay dawdling.

I turned around to face Fang, who had a grim expression on his face. The rest of the flock had landed in a clearing down below, somewhere in the southern area of the United States.

"Yeah, sure, Fang." I replied, eye twitching. This better not involve him kissing me and making me run off and the flock getting attacked and-

"We need to break up."

I blinked twice and stared at him. "You heard me."

"You know, I don't know if we were qualified as "together" in the first place. We never had a proper date." Yeah, I thought, one minus all the flyboys and things out to kill us.

"I thought I'd make that clear first. Come down." Fang continued, his expression betraying nothing. Guarded like he would against a stranger. What's wrong with him?

The moment I thought that, a flicker of fear dashed across his eyes.

I watched him a little longer before dropping down to join the others.

I sat by myself, in silence, while Nudge huddled with Iggy and Gazzy, and Angel sat in Fang's lap. All of them across the fire looking at me.

"We want you to go."

Five words tore my heart out like an Eraser never could. I mean, they tore Fang to shreds, sure, but I was completely positive none of that physical pain could currently compare.

"You what?"

Generic, shocked, two word answer. Nice going, Max, I thought to myself despite the horrible current situation.

"We want you to go. You're putting us in danger. We're running like cowards around the world." Iggy stated, pale sightless eyes looking through the fire in my general direction.

I swallowed uneasily as a tear made its way down my face.

"That's your decision. Flock democracy rules, right?" I chuckled a little, more tears falling as I struggled to hide my trembling voice. This is like the worst fear come true, I thought.

"Just take your bag. Go. We don't want to see you again."

A bit abrupt, but it'll have to do, I thought, my survival instincts kicking in as shields went up against Angel's mind prodding. Her bright blue eyes stared at me tearfully as she begged me not to make this goodbye any longer than it was.

"I love you all. Whatever it is I did wrong, I'm sorry. I'll hope you guys find it in you to forgive me." And with the simple words, I took flight, backpack slung over my shoulders.

If you ever do.

I flew, surprising myself very much, 10 hours all the way to Antarctica, full speed, wings out, hyperdrive. Not bad at all, I told myself as a plowed to a stop in the icy ground, all the while pulling my jacket a little tighter around me. Good thing for bird kid warmth powers.

What was there left for me to do? Save the world? I couldn't save it, not without my flock by my side. Not without companions, not without anything.

I stared ahead at the snowy landscape, begging it to give me some answers.

Begging it to tell me what to do. Begging it to tell me this was all a dream and it was just a nightmare.

"Nightmare, you say?"

A dark voice crept up behind me surprising me almost as much as Fang sometimes did. Almost.

"Yeah. I thought that." I said cautiously.

"Oh, no worries. I'm just feeding off your fear. Of course, since you can see me, you obviously are. Child," He seemingly melted all the way into the shadows.

I looked around frantically, hairs on the back of my neck prickling with the sense of imminent danger.

The sound of something cutting through flesh.

I screamed.

A line of fire lit all the way from my lower back to my hip. It was nothing like I'd ever felt before, like something was seeping into my veins, freezing my motions, invading my thoughts and-

I-

couldn't-

think-

anymore

The pain seemed to multiply as I craned my head, turning to look at my assailant. I finally caught a good look.

Dressed in a black robe melting at every edge into his skin was a man with grey skin, a trailing cape on his robe, black falcon styled haircut, sharp nose and golden eyes. Black sand bent to his will around his body.

"Yes, I will relish in your fear until you, you fall and die and fail to resurrect under the light of the moon." He cackled madly, light grey teeth glinting.

"What the hell are you talking about?" I asked, clenching my teeth. Pain is just a message, pain is just a message…

His clammy fingers with sharp nails dug into the skin around my neck, scratching and finding a tight grip.

"Too bad you'll never know."

He squeezed and black spots entered my vision. I attempted to call out but nothing worked. I tried to move my limbs but they were frozen.

"Sorry, child, but sometimes you don't always get what you want."

The black dots began to grow around my field of sight before they gradually overwhelmed me.

The pain in my back abruptly halted and I felt my body fall limp, landing on the cold, hard ice.

I wish I could have done more...I'm sorry for failing you, I thought as my consciousness left my body.

Jack Frost POV

What a great landscape, he thought, soaring over the landscape. I did a great job today.

The white snow blanketed the ice perfectly, sparkling in the soft sunlight as Wind parted the clouds.

A scream in the distance.

The hell?

"Wind, take me towards the scream!" He shouted and it howled around him in reply, shooting off in the direction of the unnerving sound.

The gale died away as his feet crunched on the thin snowy cover, frost patterns spreading around his feet as he approached the figure who lay unmoving on the ice, dark rosettes of blood spreading onto the cold floor.

It was a girl, her blond sun streaked hair splayed out on the ground, eyes shut, rosy pink lips slightly parted. With a start Jack realized the sun had already begun to set in the distance.

"Hello?" he asked, kneeling down to touch the body.

His hand met already cooling skin.

She's dead, he thought.

If only...

How the hell did she get here?

He surveyed her clothes, nothing but a green transitioning to silver fleece jacket to protect her against the freezing temperature of the South Pole. Large slits cut into the back.

A brownish white feather laid on the ice beside her.

Stained with black sand.

What the hell happened here?

He decided to stand vigil for the girl who seemed just around the age of 15, two years prior to his age of death. He didn't know her, granted, but he didn't know anyone else either. Except the Guardians.

Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman.

He'd only interacted with them on minimal circumstances. Once or twice.

A lonely 300 years... he sighed to himself.

When he looked up, the moon shone down on him and parted the clouds as though they were there in the first place, dissolving them as they went.

"Why am I here? For the last time, why on earth am I here?" He pleaded it quietly.

MiM's light grew so it encompassed him, creating a soft shadow behind. The moonbeams condensed to gather on the girl's body.

Is she going to be resurrected here? His silent question went unanswered as the light quickly surrounded the girl and her body floated upwards. This happened to me too...

Her eyes opened. And instantly Jack knew that they were the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen. Her appearance began changing.

Blonde hair into shining gold with blue, red, green and silver streaks running through it. Her skin seemed to warm and sparkle with energy. Her eyes...

Her eyes were a kaleidoscope of changing colors, never stopping, like a current of a river swirling and ever changing.

He stared at her as wings unfolded from the slits she had in her jacket. They turned from the color of a hawk into pure white with veins of gold.

Glowing with raw energy.

And she took her first step, as an immortal, on the cold ice, feet now bare from the transformation. She turned her head and looked around as if searching for something...

Then her eyes met his.

Her voice trickled out like tinkling bells, lined with confusion. He nearly slipped into a trance.

"Who the hell are you, and what just happened to me?"
