Anyway the wind blows.
"All Glee Club members should be backstage in 20 minutes." Announced a voice through the speakers at the hall of the theater where Regionals were held that year. There were some kids from Oral Intensity and Vocal Adrenaline around but no one from New Directions. No one with the exception of Quinn Fabray. She was walking around, thinking about everything that she's been through the past year and where she was now. It was pretty hard to believe for her.
She sat down at the bottom of the stair at a side with both of her hands on her belly; her sight lost somewhere. She didn't know exactly how much time passed since she sat down until she felt someone sitting next to her.
"It's the big night." A familiar voice said, in a not at all mean way which surprised her.
"Yeah… I'm sure you are not even a tad nervous about you and your soulless machines you've got as team mates" She replayed a little defensive to Jesse St. James' comment.
"Well… you are right about the soulless machine part" He said, joking around, but she didn't laugh. She in fact remained silent. "Look, I actually hope you guys…"
"Save it St. James, I don't care about your hopes." Quinn snapped at his attempt of being nice.
"I actually thought that you, out of all of them, you would understand me."
She was doing pretty well at pretending she didn't care what he was doing talking to her, but that felt personal. Quinn couldn't help but asking as they look at each other.
"Me? Why would I understand you?"
"You know what it is to have to lie to someone you love out of pressure, reputation, status. How's your bad not as bad as mine?"
"I didn't egg someone in the middle of a parking lot Jesse." She got back at him quickly, defensive again.
"You think Finn didn't feel as humiliated as Rachel having to find out by someone else the baby wasn't his and worst… having the whole club knowing about it?"
Quinn lost her power of speech as she looked away. Jesse was right, she actually wasn't any better than him.
"I get it. I get you. You had a lot to protect and a lot to lose. I did too. My reputation, my future..."
"You could've still not done it. If you really loved her, you are gonna regret it." The knot inside her throat was barely letting her speak.
"You are right. If we win today, I'll probably get home after we put the trophy in our choir room and I'm going to feel empty because I know I lost that one thing I knew was real. You know…? It was much easier when I didn't care."
Quinn finally looked back at him and he did the same. They both realized they spent a lot of time together in the past but never got to talk and know each other and see how much they were alike.
"If you think it was the real deal… maybe with some time, who knows… you'll both grow up and leave this in the past."
"Who knows… right?" He said, regretful standing up from the step of the stairs and offered her a hand. "Come on, we gotta be at backstage soon"
She took his hand and stood up carefully placing her free hand on her belly and once she was up they remain standing in front of each other for a moment, looking into each other's eyes and they knew it. They understood one another completely.
