Prologue

"Uncle Jacob?"

"Mhm?" Jacob tucked the little girl into her bed.

"Why doesn't Mommy and Daddy tuck me in?"

Jacob paused for a moment, and then continued.

"They don't believe in sleep."

The little girl was puzzled, for she believed it was silly that Mommy and Daddy do not sleep.

"Why not?" She asked.

Jacob laughed, "Because they're vampires, sweetie! Vampires don't sleep."

"I'm a vampire."

"You're also a little girl," he teased, "girls need their beauty rest." He tucked in the last fold.

"Do Mommy and Daddy love me?"

Jacob chuckled, "What makes you say that?"

"They never play with me, not like you."

The little girl, all tucked in her bed, stared at Jacob behind her bed sheets in wonder. Jacob contemplated his answer. She could not know the impact this question had one him. He was left with a short and ambiguous answer to satisfy her.

"Your mommy and daddy are very busy."

"No they're not. All they do is hunt animals for us to eat."

"Your daddy works."

"I guess," she seemed to trail off in thought, "but Mommy doesn't."

Jacob remained silent at her side. He was always amazed by her precocious personality. He remembered the oath he gave to her parents: to protect and care for this girl; however this oath should not have lessen the duty of her parents. But, he thought, her parents gave her the best of everything: a large and secure house, food to eat, unconditional love. However, in his heart, he sympathized with the little girl. Is this girl truly neglected, or is she asking a simple question that popped into her mind? He let out a sigh as he left the dark room.

"Good night," he muttered in a tender voice.

"You loved Mommy, didn't you?"

Again, he was aghast. Again, he stop in his tracks, panicked, raced in his mind the answer he shall give in reply. He decided to be honest. He sat beside her bed.

"Yes, I did." He let out a sigh as he reminisced the time he loved her mother.

"But she loved Daddy, right?"

"Yes, yes." He snickered to himself.

"Is that why you protected me, because you loved Mommy?"

Jacob was caught off-guard. He looked into the little girl's eyes, almost filled with rejection. Why she asked these questions, he could not comprehend.

He reassured her, "I protect you because I love you, Renesmee. I only care about you."

A smile permeated the little girl's face, though it was cloaked by the darkness. However, he saw her eyes light up through the dark shadows of the night. "Did you have to fight your family?"

A pain clenched Jacob's chest as he thought about his betrayal. "Yes."

The little girl's smile vanished, for she lamented for her Uncle Jacob. "I'm sorry" she apologized, "I made you lose your family."

"No," Jacob kissed her head, "I chose to protect you. Besides, I still have them around. Now go to sleep, my little princess."

"Good night, Uncle Jacob."

And with that he left the room and shut the door.

"Good night, Renesmee. I love you, don't forget that."
