"Walk away now and I'll never see you again. Am I right?"

Roxas throws a backward glance over his shoulder. It's more of an acknowledgment to that than anything else, because he doesn't want to see any trace of green through the black. More than not, he feels a stinging tendril of pain coil up inside him like a spiked helix, but he ignores that and keeps moving forward, away.

"Not going to say goodbye, then?" Axel says to his back.

"I shouldn't have to." Roxas' voice is rigid, like unpolished diamonds. And they almost succeed in cutting him down. "Won't even make a difference."

Axel shuffles his feet awkwardly like he means to take those few steps towards Roxas and catch him in his arms and never let him go; as though he yearns to crush the little dove's wings so it'll never fly again, if that'll mean it'll stay forever.

Roxas just closes his eyes for a suspended moment and sighs so his lungs ache, because he knows Axel wouldn't ever take those few steps.

"Sorry, then. For… whatever, y'know? This thing we had. Or whatever it was," Axel grates a little harder than he means, words like a boiling waterfall in reverse. "If what I say even makes sense to you anymore," he adds. "I swear they used to."

Maybe these are tears sliding down my face, Roxas muses to himself as he brushes the tip of his tongue across his upper lip. Then his eyes snap open and he says, "I'm still not saying it."

"T'would be nice if you did."

Roxas grunts indifferently and gestures for the darkness in front of him to solidify.

He whispers inwardly, so he lets his mind know, and no one else.

Only, Axel catches it.

"I won't tell you goodbye. Because this isn't it yet."

And then Roxas is gone.
