Title: Home is Where the Heart Is
Pairing: Mary/Francis, hints of Mary/Sebastian,
Spoilers/Warnings: Future Fic, Spoilers for 1x08 {Fated}
Author Note/Disclaimer: This kind of ignores the promo for the 2nd half of Reign at least in some areas, considering it doesn't really handle the castle portion of the promo. Also I don't own Reign.
Summary: He knows her heart her would never belong to him, because she left her heart with Francis.
~x~

He knows that Mary will never love him, at least in the way he wants her to.

Even though, they spent the past couple of months living together in a small two-room cottage near the France and Germany border.

She stayed in her room, and he stayed in the other.

Never together.

The only source of intimacy they have really had since then was one chaste kiss in the woods. Shortly after their escape, but he knows in the long run, it was only a thank you kiss after he saved her.

But he knows she doesn't have any romantic feelings for him. She has made that quite clear to him, constantly saying even though she values his friendship, her heart lies with Francis.

He also knows the only reason why Mary refuses to return to the castle is because she is under the belief; she would be the result of Francis's death.

After six months of being on the run, whatever romantic feelings he may have had for Mary started to diminish.

Maybe it's because he has grown to accept the fact that, for Mary, her heart will always be Francis, or the fact that she is no longer the girl he had fallen in love with because this girl's spirit is so diluted. He can barely remember the last time she smiled or laughed.

It must have been six months ago with Francis. But now when she even hears rumors about Francis or French politics she would get this sad look on her face, and look towards the castle.

He knows that hearing rumors about Henry pushing Francis to marry a princess form Austria is hard for her or even the news about Francis's personality. Supposedly he is grown to be a lot colder to the point he doubts Francis would ever truly forgive him or Mary again. He knows what it must have looked like, when he saw Mary running off with his older brother.

The brother he saw kissing her, then openly challenged him a few days later. He will admit he didn't have Mary's best interest at her heart then. Instead he pretty much took an advantage of her drunken state, and Olivia's arrival to get what he wanted.

A failed attempt to win Mary's heart.

When in reality, he has nothing to offer really. People will know him as Henry's bastard son, or the bastard son that tried to kill his brother, or at least he is sure that is how history will spin it if his mother's plan worked.

He knows regardless if his mother's plan worked and he became the next king of France, it wouldn't change Mary's feelings for Francis because for Mary, Francis is her true love.

Her soul mate.

He knows that if Nostradamus never predicted the prophecy, Mary and Francis would probably be living in marital bliss, and trying for a kid or two.

He silently studies Mary's figure looking in the direction of the castle, before deciding to pack up their stuff.

Tomorrow they will go back home.

He knows there will be consequences for their actions, and it would probably take a long time before Francis is willing to forgive him or Mary again.

But he knows despite all of that.

Mary will be happy. Her moods would probably lift the moment she sees the castle, despite the prophecy, despite Francis cold attitude towards her.

Because home is where the heart is, and for Mary her heart lies with Francis.
