Jenova shifted her position on her uncomfortable stone and sighed. This game was immensely boring. She didn't even know what it was called, only that her twin sister, Alqiri, had discovered it in some tome and had suggested that she, Jenova and Dravek play it. Apparently, all except one person was supposed to hide, and then to wait until the one person who didn't found them. If anyone bothered to ask Jenova, she would say that it seemed like a lousy preparation for war.

Suddenly, she heard a sharp rustling to her right. She turned, only to see the face of her best friend, Dravek, peeking from between the stalks.

"Jenova, may I hide with you? I can't seem to find anywhere else that's suitable."

Jenova sighed. "I suppose you may. Although those grasses are likely to cause itching. Come, sit here next to me."

She patted the spot next to her on the stone. Dravek smiled and crawled from the grasses to sit on the rock. He leaned backwards on his hands and spread his legs slightly, acting very casual for a future hunter.

The two remained in silence for a bit, listening to the wind blowing and the swaying of the tall stalks. Suddenly, after a few minutes, Dravek spoke.

"Jenova?"

"Hm?"

"When you get older and become an adult, like your parents...will you forget me?"

Jenova turned to him, surprised. Dravek had never sounded this serious before. "What do you mean? Of course I won't. You're my greatest friend-how could I forget you?"

He stared off into the air for a few seconds. When he turned back to the young princess, he had a small smile on his face.

"You'll forget me, Jenova. I know you will. You'll become betrothed, and then you will have a husband, and then you won't have any time for me. I'll just be a hunter, and you'll be a...a-a-a..."

Jenova's mouth pressed into a hard line. "A queen."

He nodded. "Yes. A queen. No, not a queen. THE queen. You'll be the queen of Afoelia, powerful and respected and feared. You'll be honored."

She turned away from him. "Alqiri can have that honor. That life is not for me."

"Alqiri can't. Technically, you're the older twin. You were birthed first, so you are first in line for the queen."

"Why can't Tadel rule? He's older."

"Tadel is male, Jenova. You know he can't rule. We have to have a queen."

Now it was Jenova's turn to stare off into space. She watched a falling leaf be swept up into the wind. Dravek's voice got soft, until he was almost whispering.

"And since you'll have to become queen, you'll have to forget me too."

She turned to him. He was watching the ground. He looked so sad. Jenova felt her mood plummet. She didn't like this. This wasn't the Dravek she knew. She smiled and reached over to pat his back, in a vain attempt to cheer him up.

"Come on. Don't be so sad," Jenova said. "Perhaps you can marry me, and then I won't forget you."

He suddenly shot up, taking her by surprise. "Yes! Maybe I can! Jenova, why don't we marry?"

She stared at him. "Dravek, I was only jesting..."

"Come now! Please? I...I would be so happy to spend my days with you..."

He turns towards her, grabbing her hands in his. He raises them to his lips, barely kissing the clasped fingers. She gasped. A sacred Afoelian way of proposal. He really meant this.

"Jenova, will you do it? When you grow older and prepare to become a queen, will you marry me?"

At first Jenova was shocked. It was such a surprise for this kind of desperation to be coming from Dravek, a boy who had remained strong and powerful throughout all his childhood. She never would have thought that he would be so insecure about losing her that he would ask for her hand in marriage. Perhaps she shouldn't accept this…It could have dire consequences…

But then she sighed. She might as well agree to his proposal. It would calm him down, and he would forget when the two of them were older.

"Yes, Dravek. I promise to marry you."

"Thank you, Jenova. Remember your promise."

Don't bet on it, she thought.
