My Little Meitantei

SHINARA POV

Shin woke up, her head aching horribly as she opened her eyes, the suns brilliance burning her retinas as she closed her eyes again, trying to shy away from the bright light.

"Shin-Chan~" came the sing-songy voice of her boyfriend, the amazing and debonair, Kaito Kuroba AKA Kaitou Kid, the phantom thief and the keeper of her heart.

Normally she would have been very happy to see the thief so early in the morning, but today was not one of those times. She groaned and covered her head as he stepped in, a small pout on his face as he sat beside her.

"Dove~ what's wrong?" he asked with a whine in his voice.

"I have a headache", she muttered beneath the blankets.

"Aw~" he cooed as he pulled the blanket down from her face.

He peeked over the edge and smiled at her as azure eyes stared up at him, squinting through the light. He moved to block the sun as he grinned and leaned closer to her face, nuzzling her neck. He frowned when he felt the heat coming from her skin. Sitting back up, he gently placed a hand on her head.

"You have a fever", he said with a sigh as he stood up, "Stay in bed today and try to get some rest. I will make you some eggs and toast and bring you a cool cloth with a couple fever reducers."

"You don't need to do that. I'm…"

"If you say fine", he said cutting her off, "I will pin you to the bed until you fall asleep."

She flopped back against the pillows with a scowl and he grinned.

"Good Shin-chan", he said petting her head, before turning and shutting the door behind him.

"Idiot Kaito", she muttered before a small smile tugged at her lips and she closed her eyes and tried to sleep.

KID POV

Kid looked around the downstairs part of his apartment. Everything was mostly set up. They were going to be holding the surprise party for Shinara's twenty-first birthday at the local museum, but with Shinara being ill, he didn't want her to feel overwhelmed. He had instead called everyone up and told them about her being sick, changing the location to his own apartment where he knew she would feel less stuffy then in a grand scale area. He had the balloons, he had the streamers, he had the decorations for the table, and he had her present, so what was he forgetting? He wondered to himself as he looked around.

The doorbell to his apartment startled him. Rushing to the door, he was surprised to see Hakuba standing there with Aoko.

"Hey, hope we aren't interrupting", they greeted him.

"Nah, just finishing the last of the preparations. Come inside", he said as he stood back and allowed them in. He took their coats and placed them on the bed in his room as they looked around, both nodding in approval.

"Very nice", commented Aoko with a smile, "I'm sure she will love it."

Kaito sighed in relief and smiled, "Thanks, I wasn't sure."

"The Sherlock holmes theme is really a good idea" agreed Hakuba as he studied the tea pot and tea cups that Kaito had bought as a present for Shinara, along with a few other things.

"Thanks, I don't know much about Sherlock Holmes, but I figured you might be able to tell me a few things."

"I think you nailed it. Nice job, Kuroba-kun", Saguru said with a smile as he turned to his friend. He grinned when he noticed the thief's relieved expression.

"So, what kind of cake did you get?" asked Aoko as she knelt to look at the wicker chairs Kaito had remodeled his living room with, for this one occasion.

Cake? … CAKE! That's what he forgot! He forgot to get a cake!

Kaito dropped his head into his hands and allowed his upper body to fall onto the kitchen counter with a thump. Aoko and Hakuba stared at him in surprise.

"You forgot the cake didn't you?" asked Aoko with a smile.

Kaito looked up with a frown and gave a sad nod.

"Such a kicked puppy", muttered Hakuba as he grabbed his coat off the bed and put it back on, "Well come on then, let's go buy your fiancé the best cake she has ever known."

Kaito stared at Saguru and Hakuba just smiled. Kaito smiled back.

"Thanks", he said as he grabbed his own jacket.

"Not a problem", Hakuba answered as he sent a wink Aoko's way who waved goodbye to them as she turned to the living room.

"You can definitely tell a guy did this", she muttered as began sprucing the place up with the touch of a little girl magic.

HAKUBA POV

Saguru watched in moderate amusement and concern as Kaito nearly had a breakdown as he stared at the shop full of hundreds of different kinds and colors of cakes.

'Surely any cake would be good?' thought Hakuba, but he didn't say anything as he knew how perfect Kaito wanted tonight to be for Shinara, his fiancé of three years. That was hard to believe, Hakuba thought to himself as he watched Kaito dash back and forth between several cakes, it felt like a lifetime since the takedown of BO and MKO and yet it had only been a couple years. Kaito and Shinara had gotten engaged shortly after, with the promise that after their college graduation, they would be married. That time was coming quickly, seeing as graduation was now less than a year away.

"I don't know which one to pick Haku!" yelled Kaito as slammed his forehead into the glass display.

'Ouch' winced Hakuba as he started towards the thief.

"Kaito, you know her. What does she like? Do you want this to match the theme? Do you want it to match her? Do you want it to match you and her? What?"

"I…I want…" he sighed as a baker came out of the back.

"Oh, sorry I didn't realize anyone was in here. Can I help you?"

The baker jumped back in surprise when Kaito burst into tears and clinged on to his apron.

"I need a cake!" he cried in desperation.

The baker and Hakuba both sweat-dropped, blinking at the overreaction.

"O-okay young man, what kind of cake?" asked the baker nervously.

"I want…I want…" he paused not sure what he wanted.

Seeing the waterworks coming again, the baker quickly placed a gentle hand on the kids shoulder and began showing him the different designs.

"Is the cake for someone special?" he asked.

"Yeah my fiancé", nodded Kaito, tears wailing up in his eyes.

"A-alright, and can you tell me about her? Maybe I can help you decide a theme to go with?"

The baker startled back when Kaito looked up at him, his eyes wide like the man had just declared he was God or something.

"Please!" the boy shouted, "help me!"

"A-alright, so how did you two meet?" he asked.

"Well, I was flying over a rooftop and planning to go see about a really pretty gemstone when she shot at me with a paralysis gun and I fell and she pinned on my stomach and then I tripped her and I dashed off the side of the building and she yelled at me that she would find me again!" Kaito rushed to the wide eyed Baker who just stared at him and then turned to Hakuba with a desperate look of 'who is this kid!'

"Huh?" the baker asked instead.

"They met on the roof and he made her mad and she attacked him and threatened to chase him down", explained Hakuba in terms that wouldn't make the baker think that Kaito was completely insane (although he had an idea the baker already thought that).

"I-I see, so it was shaky ground. Okay, how about the first time you asked her out?"

"Oh", thought Kaito as remembered the first kiss he had given her on the rooftops in front of the police, "I kissed her on the rooftop, stealing her heart as I said I would in my note and gave her back the jewel. It wasn't the right one anyways."

The baker once again just blinked and looked to Hakuba for translation who was looking rather annoyed.

"He kissed her against her will, but it turned her on and he gave her a…gift", said Hakuba as he tried to make Kaito seem somewhat more normal and less…Kaitou Kidish.

"A-ah", said the baker as he stepped back a little, "well…how about a cake with a jewel on it?"

Kaito stared at him. The baker stared back.

"That would be awesome!" yelled Kaito with a large grin, "Can you put writing on it too?"

"S-sure, what do you want it to say?" the baker asked.

"Hmm… write 'Happy 21st Birthday Shinara Kudo' … Oh! And put …" Kaito continued on chatting to the uneasy baker about how he wanted the cake to be. Hakuba just watched and shook his head fondly as he wondered what tonight might bring.

SHINARA POV

Shinara woke to the sound of a bang and then a mumbled complaint as someone literally fell through her door. She had just stepped onto the floor from the stairs when she watched Kaito fall flat on his face, an angry red mark on his nose where he had landed.

"Are you alright?" she asked kneeling beside him.

He looked up at her and smiled, his eyes twinkling as he placed a hand on her forehead.

"Good, your fever is gone. I want to take you out to dinner, but first…" he handed her a white bag with blue sparkling gift-paper hiding the object within. "Happy Birthday!"

She smiled at him as she took the white bag and opened it up. She stared at it and then him.

"Well", he asked with excitement, "Do you like it?"

She pulled it out and looked at it with something like curiosity before recognition filtered across her face. She smiled as she realized it was a white hooded cape, a lot like the Kaitou Kid one, but made specifically for her. Kaito took it from her and swept it around her shoulders as he buckled the silver and crystalized chain in the front allowing it to hang loosely off of her neck. It looked beautiful.

"Thank you so much", she said looking at it. It felt warm and cool at the same time and she could see the blush that colored her fiancés cheeks as he bowed and offered her his hand.

"Might I have the pleasure of your company tonight, milady?" he asked her.

"Of course, gentleman thief", she said with a smile as he smiled back and led her to the car he had borrowed from his mom.

She got into the passengers' side as he got into the drivers and smirked before starting it up and on its way.

"So where are we going?" she asked as she pulled the cape closer around her. She was wearing jeans and a light blue sweater, but it was still a bit chilly out tonight.

"It's a surprise", Kaito said with a wink, "but first I need to make a run by my place. Also I want to show you something."

She nodded. She could see he was hiding something from her and she had a feeling she knew what it was, but she didn't want to ruin it for him by telling him she had figured it out. Sometimes it didn't pay to be a detective.

SHINARA POV

"Here they are", whispered Hakuba as he glanced out the window of Kaito's apartment, "get ready!"

The lights turned out and the heads ducked down as they waited patiently for the birthday girl to arrive. When the door opened and the lights flipped on, they all jumped and shouted as loud as they could to greet her arrival.

"Surprise!"

Shinara froze where she stood and just stared for a moment before falling into a fit of laughter as she turned to Kaito who was staring at her with a look of devastation.

"S-sorry, I just wasn't expecting the theme", she snorted as she looked at the garden party theme that had been decorated to be in the time of Sherlock Holmes. She knew he had gone through a lot of trouble to surprise her with this and she felt a little bad about laughing at it, but she just didn't expect this type of thing from him, of all people.

Noticing his somewhat dejected face, she quickly went to reassure him. It startled her, when she realized he must have been worried she wouldn't like it.

"I love this, thank you", she said, leaning in, her lips ghosting across his. He smiled one of the most dazzling smiles she had ever seen him give; it was a completely real smile with not an ounce of fakeness in it. Something that made her heart beat rapidly and flip flop as she looked away, her face red as she went to greet her surprise guests.

"Happy birthday Shinara!" yelled Harley as she tackled the teen girl, nearly knocking her down.

Shinara smiled as she turned to Harley and hugged her before greeting Kazuha also, a grin on his face as he offered her another small hug.

Along with Harley, Toyama, Aoko, and Hakuba; there in the room was also Ai, Agasa, Ran and Sonoko, Chikage and Jii, as well as Jodie Starling and to her upmost surprise…Bourbon. They each greeted her warmly and even Bourbon shook her hand with a smile as he turned to Ai.

"We will be leaving you to your party", he replied as he took the small hand of the girl beside him and led her to the door, "She and I have a date."

Ai smirked at Shinara's shocked face as she left hand in hand with Bourbon, a small twinkle in her eye as the door shut behind them. Pulled from her shock by the feeling of arms circling around her waist, she smiled up at Kaito who smiled back down at her.

"Time to blow the candles out and make a wish", he whispered.

She nodded as everyone gathered around the table, the large white cake being set in front of her. She stared at it and then glanced at Kaito who grinned. The cake was a white and square shaped with a beautiful floral design. The top right corner was decorated by three small jewels, one blue, one red, and one white like a diamond. Underneath in the center of the cake it read "Happy 21st Birthday Shinara Kudo; my little Meitantei" and laying beneath the red written words was a single, real, red rose.

"How beautiful" she whispered as she closed her eyes and made a wish. She then smiled as she blew out the candles and everyone cheered.

As they cut the cake a little later that night after she had finished opening up packages, she couldn't help but feel like this was the best birthday she had ever had. Surrounded by friends and her lover…what more could she have honestly wished for, but another birthday just as good as this one?

"Are you happy?" whispered Kaito in her ear, as she turned and placed her arms around his neck.

He drew her against his chest as he leaned in, his indigo eyes capturing her undivided attention before their lips met with a gentle passion.

"Very", she answered as she leaned against him, the noises of the night fading around them as the two became the center of their very own existence, "You are all I could ever wish for, Kaito", she whispered.

She felt his warmth against her and closed her eyes. Seriously, with a man as great as this, what else could she honestly ever ask for, but his undying and faithful love?

He smiled as he nuzzled her ear and whispered to her with a quiet, tingling breath, "Happy Birthday, My Beautiful and Great Detective."
