An Unwanted Truth
"Let me guess you're here to talk to me about Glee Club, I'm not interested in coming back," said Quinn in a bored tone as she smoothed down the hem of her Cheerio's top.
She had already been approached by every other member of the Glee Club trying to talk her into returning and was beyond irritated at this point.
"No actually," Kurt replied. "I just wanted to tell you something."
"And what would that be?" Quinn asked while looking at her nails, as if anything he said would be of no interest to her.
"Just a truth, and a promise," Kurt returned catching her gaze. She didn't respond but she didn't look away so he took that as a sign to continue.
"It's your life Q and I may not understand why you want this again so badly but, if you want seek empty popularity and false friends who have and would stab you in the back at the drop of a hat, then that's up to you. If it's important enough to you to be able to look back on high school and remember how being the Head Bitch and having people pretend to like you meant more than having real friends and actually enjoying your time here, rather than having to fake it and be alone in a crowd like you told me it felt like once, you remember?" Quinn didn't respond but her eyes were suspiciously bright.
"If living up to the expectations of people you don't give a damn about and who doesn't give a damn about you, and who you'll never see or even remember the names of once you leave here, then that's your mistake to make and regret," he continued in a matter of fact tone.
"However, I wanted you to know that no matter how much you ignore or bully us, no matter how much you don't respect or care about us enough to show us any of the friendship and support that we've shown you, that we'll still be here because I consider you my friend Quinn even if you don't consider me yours," he said a little softer and with a hint of sadness lacing his voice.
"So when it all comes crashing down again and those you've chosen to be acquaintances with leave you or bully you again, just know that you can always come back, no judgements, no accusations, just acceptance." He stated staring at her the entire time. Quinn couldn't tear her eyes away from his unwavering gaze.
"Goodbye Quinn, I hope it works out for you, this time." Kurt finished in that same soft yet bluntly honest way, before giving a small affectionate smile and turning to leave.
Quinn just stood watching him walk away. She couldn't speak for the lump in her throat and had to turn her eyes skyward to blink back the tears that threatened to fall.
She was reeling from the truth of his words.
Had his tone been anything other than straight up unadulterated honesty then she could have bit back, tried to defend her decision, and though the words could have been seen as argumentative there was no accusation in his voice, so words failed her. She was angry that they had, normally she was quick with a scathing retort and cool enough in her temperament not to be blindsided, but Kurt had done just that and she both hated and respected him for it.
She always had respected his ability to withstand all of the ugliness thrown at him with a dignity and grace she wished she possessed, though she had never and probably would never tell him so. She knew that his words would be echoing in her head for a while yet. So it was with a small sense of peace that she returned to Cheerio's practise.
The End
