Moments Like This

It was moments like this when he could at least pretend that they were a normal couple, moments when he could imagine she felt the same way. On the occasion that they made it to one of their homes, and on the rare occasion that the other stuck around afterward, she would fall asleep quickly, avoiding all confrontation, but he would stay awake, watch over her, and sometimes, when he was sure she was asleep, he even dared to wrap an arm around her, and once he even risked falling asleep like that, but sometime during the night she rolled over, which helped them avoid any questioning.

Tonight the moments had presented themselves. He was lying on his side, head propped up by his elbow, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest. He had a routine by now, he would wait for her to fall asleep, then look at her for a while, briefly wonder what she was dreaming about, then he would either let himself slip into unconsciousness, or risk a touch.

For some unexplainable reason tonight was different. Tonight he didn't just look at her, he took her in, carefully traced every curve of her face with his eyes, it felt odd, he spent all day with her at work, seeing her personality, and enjoying her passion, and sometimes he spent all nigh with her too, and saw something else, but for some reason, he had never looked at her like he was looking at her now. He was observing her, making sure he understood all of her, and in some ways, she was just as passionate, confusing, and confidant when she was asleep, it was all just hiding beneath the surface, and there was one more thing, something he had never seen before, even when she was awake, he couldn't describe it, but it was pure her, pure Cameron. He smiled, if he could stay here forever, he would. He knew that she secretly loved his smile, unfortunately she hadn't noticed that he only smiled at her, and it's not like things would be different if she had, if anything it would make matters worse.

He sighed, this was way too complicated for their own good, he knew that, he shook his head and went back to the moments. He was studying her face again, but he wasn't looking to uncover anything anymore, now he was just watching her, like he always did. He reached a hand out and ran his fingers over a lock of her hair, he then let them slide across her shoulder, and down her arm, till he was clutching her hand, he squeezed it ever so slightly before wrapping the rest of his arm around her. Soon he would be asleep, and most likely dream about her, but for now, he just enjoyed the moments, moments when he could pretend they were a normal couple, moments when he could imagine she felt the same way.

Because in moments like this they were just Chase and Cameron, two people in love. Even if only one of them knew.
