Sam's only safety was the wall he leaned against. He was afraid of how much trouble he'd gotten in, running away, but he was even more afraid of what John had said.
Monsters weren't—couldn't be—real.
The wind howled violently as he hugged his jacket tighter.

Dean waited until John was passed out, done yelling and swinging his fists. Dean's new bruises sent a clear message: never let Sammy out of your sight.
He looked at the car keys to his father's Impala.
Searching in the morning wouldn't do. He had to risk it.
