Lonely souls

God knows you're lonely souls
God knows you're lonely souls
God knows you're lonely souls

When he came right down to it. He was lonely. Sundered for all eternity from his own kind. The last of the Time Lords

I believe there's a time and a place
To let your mind drift and get out of this place
I believe there's a day and a place
That we will go to, and I know you wanna share.

He recognized their lonely souls. His companions bright and shinning lifelines to grasp onto. To share all his joys and passion with.

Rose wanting to be part of something bigger, be more than life had allowed her. A girl with no future, no prospects and no talent save for saving the galaxy. He didn't recognize just how much he loved her until her lost her. Left her standing on that lonely beach.

Martha was having a layover in life. Adoring eyes following him through space and time. He pretended not to notice. Made believed he didn't know how infatuated she was with him. It made it easier not to see. Not to face that inevitable heartbreak. If she got hurt, she would leave him alone. Again. She did leave him just for that.

And Donna. Dearest, most passionate Donna. How he missed her. Not just a companion but a best friend. A confident to share his soiled past with. He told her things he's never told a human before. And still she loved him. Now more alone than he could dare to think.

There's no secret to living
Just keep on walking
There's no secret to dying
Just keep on flying.

Flying through the Time Vortex. Just kept going. Don't stop. Can't look back. No more companions. He couldn't possibly carry any more pain.

I'm gonna die in a place that don't know my name
I'm gonna die in a space that don't hold my fame.

This was it. He was going to die again. He going to miss this hair. Dying this time without anyone to explain the new look to. Dying alone. How he wished there was someone to hold his hand through this.

God knows you're lonely souls
God knows you're lonely souls.

I believe there's a time when the cord of life
Should be cut, my friends
I believe there's a time when the cord can be cut
And this vision ends

It was brilliant, this life. So much fun and zest and passion and love and pain and forgetfulness. They won't recognize him now. Donna was horrified when Jack explained it to her. Vainly he wondered what if he'd be ginger this time.

But I'm gonna die in a place that don't know my name
And I'm gonna cry in a space that don't hold my fame.

In that moment of painful clarity he remembered. He remembered that with them he forgot that pain, just for a moment. Forgot and remembered only affection and joy so strong it burned him.

Walking in the cold
Just keep on flying
There'll be a searchlight
On the mountain high

Now at his loneliest he saw how stupid he had been. He was afraid if being hurt again. Afraid if he took one more blow to the hearts he would never get up again. That his lonely soul would just shrivel and stop caring. He though he had come to the conclusion that these companions were pain waiting to happen. Now he saw they were waiting to stop the pain.

God knows you're lonely souls
God knows you're lonely souls

He knew. As soon as this pain was over and he got used to his new teeth he'd find another. There were always others. Each a handhold from this impossibly long life of memories.

He burned.
