"It's not what you think"

The voices were back again, this time making more sense than ever. She looked at the stick, down amongst the leaves, and considered its possible uses. Maybe a divining rod. Hmm. She picked it up. Maybe she could find water with it. Or break it into pieces, to be used in some kind of game, like mahjong. Yes!

"River, put it down!", an imaginary voice yelled. She looked around in the quiet, whispering forest for the source of the sound.

"Put the gun down!", another disembodied voice yelled. She looked around, panicky. Wasn't she alone out here, just a nice walk through the woods. Gun? What gun?

Suddenly some force grabbed the stick out of her hand. Then there was Kaylee, comforting her, arms around her. "It's okay, River. It's Okay"

She looked up and saw Mal, Jayne, and the others, and realized it was not OK.

She'd liked the forest.
