Shikamaru sighed into his pillow, pulling it over his head. It was too early, but once the sun started to creep into his room he was awake.

How troublesome, he thought. He'd not gotten a great deal of sleep and he was starting a mission this morning.

He felt a weight shift next to him and an arm drape across his back. The reason he hadn't gotten enough sleep, and had to share his small bed.

Naruto.

He'd come round the night before, holding pots of ramen and beer. He was going on a long mission whilst Shikamaru was away and he wanted to have a chance to say 'goodbye' and 'good luck' and 'be safe'.

The chūnin had let him in, they ate and drank more than they should have and then they laughed and kissed and touched and caressed and…

Shikamaru needed to get ready – thinking about last night would only disturb his routine and make leaving more difficult. He got out of bed, trying his best not to wake the younger shinobi. He laughed at himself; Naruto slept like a rock, especially after drinking and sex.

He got ready slowly, showering, getting dressed, packing his bag and cleaning up from the night before.

How do we always manage to make such a mess?Shikamaru thought begrudgingly. No wonder Naruto's place is always a tip.

Just as Shikamaru was almost ready to leave he looked over at Naruto, who was watching sleepily.

"Do you have to leave now, Shika?" Naruto mumbled.

"Yeah, I have to sign in before eight," Shikamaru replied walking over and sitting on the bed next to Naruto, his beautiful sapphire eyes looking up sadly.

"Come home safe, yeah?" Naruto whispered as Shikamaru ran his hand along the cheek gently.

"You too," Shikamaru said. It would be a couple of months before they'd see each other again. They were both skilled shinobi, but even the best shinobi die in battle. They knew that from experience.

Shikamaru lent down and kissed his lover's lips, letting them linger for a few moments before pulling away.

"Do you really have to go now?" Naruto asked, running a hand up Shikamaru's neck and through his hair, pulling the hair tie from it. Shikamaru turned to look at the clock. It was almost eight.

"I'm sorry, Naru-chan," Shikamaru sighed, "I'll see you when you get back, ok?" He quickly pulled his hair back up and kissed Naruto's lips again.

"Ok," Naruto pouted.

I'll never want to leave if we start…Shikamaru frowned at himself after he'd left for upsetting Naruto, especially since they'd be apart for so long. He paused outside the door for a moment.

It was going to be a long couple of months, for both of them. He hoped Naruto would come back safely so he could make this morning up to him.

Feedback would be appreciated ^^
