A/N: A short little thing that I decided to write because, as much as I love SessKag, Inu-Yasha and Kagome are still adorable, and I miss writing about them. A oneshot to get me back into the swing of things. Inu-Yasha's view! Enjoy!
A Personal Sunrise
By, Tia-chan
Everything was sparkling—the morning dew, frozen on the browning grass, the first rays of white sunshine bouncing off crusted ice, even the powdering of snow on the branches of spidery trees.
But, Inu-Yasha reflected, the most beautiful sight of all was Kagome's half-lidded eyes as she watched the sun rise.
Now, there was nothing beautiful to gaze at when he was lonely or afraid. Everything was varying shades of gray to him. Besides, nothing was worth thinking about when Kagome wasn't there to point out the good things he could never find.
All he could bring himself to do was slump against the branches of trees, watching the sunrise and sunset, wishing that she didn't have to be gone.
His stomach had long-since stopped rumbling protests of desertion, his hands stopped itching for retribution, his eyes stopped searching for her gleeful smile, his ears stopped swiveling to catch the sound of her tinkling laughter. His sunlight had set, and with it took all the sparkling notions and beauty, leaving him in brooding darkness.
Had it really only been three days?
He rubbed his hands over tired eyes—he hadn't been sleeping very well, his tree seemed empty without the soft snores of a sleeping kitsune and a grumbling schoolgirl beneath him.
It really wasn't fair that he had to suffer, why couldn't he have been gone, too?
Why did he have to fall in love with a girl who was weak and defenseless?
No, not weak—naïve…and she wasn't defenseless, as long as he was around.
Morning would come soon, he noted, a faint, pink line on the horizon. It looked like a scar on his darkness, mocking him with another day alone. Without the only thing that could truly make his world burst into light…
"Inu-Yasha!"
She brought with her the sun, captured it and stole it away, until it burst forth from her smile, her outstretched arms, and her shimmering eyes.
Inu-Yasha closed his own eyes; sighing, allowing himself a precious moment to smile, soak in her warmth, let the sunlight finally touch his skin. He dropped down from the tree, casually, and let her throw her arms tightly around him. He was almost burned by the intensity, but knew that he was safe as he looped his arms around her shoulders and rested a cheek against her soft hair.
"I missed you," she whispered.
"Keh, don't take so long next time, then!" he retorted. He only held on tighter, to let her know that though it was unspoken, he had missed her just as much.
"Kagome?" called a hopeful little voice. Inu-Yasha immediately jumped out of her arms, glaring sideways at the insolent kit.
His tree welcomed him with suddenly open arms.
As Kagome greeted her estranged friends, she threw a furtive smile up at the sulky hanyou. Yes, he wouldn't say it, but she knew that he had missed her, too.
