A/N: The one thing I love about this fandom is how pretty much everyone collectively decided to ignore Chloe's sudden bass voice from the film. I've never once seen it addressed outside of plots about her nodes, and I'm amused to see that PP2 seems to be sidestepping it too. Consider this my official addressing of this issue, because I wanted to write something quick and light-hearted as stress relief.
(for the few wondering, yes, TFIM is still being worked on, slowly)
'Chlo, can I ask you a question?'
'Is this a genuine question or just something to distract you from work again?'
'No, it's a real question.' At Chloe's eyebrow raise, Beca rolled her eyes. 'Okay, it's a little of both. But I really do want to ask something.'
'Okay... Shoot.'
'What happened to your voice?'
Chloe frowned, looking up from her book. 'What do you mean?'
'Well, when you first got your nodes out, your voice was all… bass-y. Like, I was genuinely considering calling up the news or the Guinness World Records, because that shit was insane. But lately whenever you sing, your voice is in normal ranges - like it was before surgery. What happened?'
There was a long pause where Chloe simply stared at her in confusion for several moments. 'My voice was "bass-y"?'
'Yes?'
'You mean… Like a guy's?'
'Uh, I guess. Why are you looking at me like that?'
When Chloe addressed her again, it was still with that confused expression, and she spoke slowly, as though talking to someone particularly mentally challenged. 'Beca, are you feeling okay?'
'Yeah, why?'
'Because I don't know what on Earth you're talking about.'
Now it was Beca's turn to stare. 'But you...'
'I'm a soprano, Beca. That's just unrealistic, nodes or not.'
'But... the bass!' Beca cried, thoroughly confused by this whole situation. 'The bass, in our final performance! It was you! I know it was, we arranged the whole thing together.'
However, Chloe shook her head. 'No... I mean, that'd be kind of impossible, wouldn't it? Considering the fact we're all altos or higher.'
'But -'
'Sorry to disappoint you.' She squinted at her girlfriend. 'Are you sure you're okay? You seem a bit flushed. It's hot in here - maybe the heat is getting to you.'
Beca felt her face; she was in fact quite warm, and also felt deeply unsettled by Chloe's revelation. Had she made up the thing about Chloe's voice entirely? 'Yeah, maybe...'
'I'll get you some water.'
'Thanks.'
Chloe stood up to go to the kitchen, but then she paused in the doorway. 'Oh, and Beca?'
'Yeah?'
'April Fool's.'
Chloe sang the words: the voice that emerged from her girlfriend was deep and rich, an unmistakable bass. Beca's jaw dropped, as Chloe let out a throaty, bass-y chuckle at her expression before running out to the kitchen. Beca could only howl back, 'April Fool's was fucking weeks ago!'
