"Excuse me," I said to a woman outside a small glass shop in Summersea, Emelan, "Would you happen to know of anywhere a glass mage such as myself could find work in the city?"
"Haven't been here very long have you?" she asked me with a smile
"I arrived yesterday. Why?"
"His grace is holding interviews today for a personal glass mage; if you hurry you can still make the interview".
"Thank you so much!" I called as a hurried back towards the Citadel I had passed earlier.
"Good morning to you all. I hope today you all try you're hardest to provide me with a good example of your glass repair skills as well as another exhibit of your fine work," began his grace, "Each of you should have been given a small window pane of broken glass. Please mend the glass. Once your work is complete please show it to our expert glass mage," he gestured to the man on his left, "if he deems your work fit he will refer you to me for the second part of this process. I wish you all luck." The duke exited the room.
50 glass mages began working all at once. This task would be simple for me. I used my magic to heat the glass to the perfect temperature inside my portable furnace. Working quickly I patched the glass, let it cool, and tested it for weakness. It was sturdy.
I walked to the front of the room and presented my work to the expert. He examined it a great length and after much thought pronounced it passable.
I moved into the room indicated to me and waited. I was the first to be approved.
By the noonday meal 9 others had joined me. His grace entered the room where we waited.
"Congratulations to you all!" he said to us, "how I wish I could have all of you as my glassworkers. However I can only choose one of you, so, what I would like you to do is bring your most useful to me 3 bells from now. Then I and my two advisers will make a decision.
He dismissed us with a wave of his hand. I already knew which invention I would use.
"They are for…" I paused for a moment searching for the unfamiliar word, "harriers. They use magic. Different key works can turn them into signal flares, tracking devices or they can fetch others with bubbles."
"Delightful! Simply delightful" exclaimed the Duke, "thank you. Please wait outside."
The anticipation mounted in the room as the murmur of voices behind the door chose the best glass mage in the city.
