Kneeling in the sun-dappled shade provided by the large tree, Winnie Foster was facing the hardest choice of her life.
She stared at the handful of spring water cupped between her two palms and didn't know what to do. She could drink and slip into the warm embrace of eternal summer, never to grow any older. Or she could toss the water away and live out the rest of her normal life, eventually becoming old and letting her edges fade until she disappeared.
She thought about Jesse--always laughing and seeing every day that he lived as a blessing, never crying a single tear. Even when things had been at their worst, he had bounced back from any unhappiness he'd felt with a wild optimism. He never had to be afraid of getting hurt, of dying. He was going to have forever, and she could share it with him, all she had to do was take a sip.
Jesse had promised to come back for her when it was safe. She knew that he would come, there had been truth in his eyes. The only question was: was she going to be here waiting when he came.
Her hands began to shake and the water she held trembled, its surface sparkling with drops of sunlight. It was a promise she held here, the second half to the one Jesse had given her, the reply that only she could make--that she would be waiting when he came back, that she loved him enough to stay young forever.
She closed her eyes tight and threw back her head, her decision made, for good or ill.
