Sometime around Summer 1989 , Columbia Med.
"This seat taken?" Asked a girl, red fiery hair, blue-green eyes, you yourself had been stunned when she had captivated your attention.
"Yeah, yeah it is." Replied a dorky, good-looking guy. "Derek." He replied, holding out his hand, to which the girl with the red hair replied; "Addison", while shaking his hand.
Class was the same, some things interesting some things boring, but it wasn't the same. If you had asked Derek why he seemed so 'tired' in Mr. Reeds class, he would've lied and said; "I was up all night studying."
In reality, he had wanted to look at the girl that had suddenly captivated him so much, so he continuously stretched his arms out, and tilted his head to the right, ever so slightly, trying his best not to get noticed by her… Addison.
Now, if you had asked Addison after Mr. Reeds class why she was so smiley, she would've just continued smiling. Everything about him intrigued her, the ocean eyes, his hair having a slight Russell Crowe vibe to it. She couldn't help it, she could tell neither of them were really the dating type of person, he was he and she was she, they both had the looks, just not the personality.
Once class had ended, as expected...nothing had happened. But, there had been that desire, that lust, both had, had. Even after class had ended it had seemed like everything was a 'dream', he went back to being Derek and she went back to being Addison. Neither of them knowing their paths would eventually cross, more sooner than later
Sometime around Late Spring 2006
He walked into her office, not with what would have been expected, but with had been necessary at this point.
"Hey." He said as he sat down on her couch, one worded answers had become his thing around her lately, he didn't hate her like she thought he did, he just couldn't put words into it, because she did still love her, he will always love her….always .
She turned around, not hearing him walk in. She didn't respond, simply acknowledged his presence.
He didn't want to waste her time, so he handed her papers, more specifically… divorce papers.
"Addie, I think it's time, I just can't anymore, I'm sorry." Derek had said, with a melancholy appearance.
Addison in that moment could've been upset, which she was… inside, she was breaking. She didn't want to show him how much he had hurt her, not anymore, not when the damage had already been done.
"Good job Derek, throw away nearly 2 decades of knowing and loving each other, your only response is 'I just can't anymore.'" She has said quoting him.
"Where were these words in New York?" She continued, "Where were they when I first handed you the papers?" She snapped at him, snatching the papers, reaching for a pen and just like that, she signed off the last name she had possessed for nearly 12 years, signed off being with the love of her life, for the rest of her life. it had been almost like ripping off a band-aid, a big one, a hurtful one.
"I'll get my things once I'm off my shift." She responded, cold and bitterly.
She walked away this time, she left her own office leaving Derek to rethink what he had done, what she had said, how the hell everything came to be.
His thoughts led to when he met her for the second time, a blind date, his blind date.
New York 1989
"You know Mark, you got to tell me something about this girl!" Derek exclaimed "What does she look like?" He asked eagerly.
"She's hot, a little tall, and wayyyyy out of your league." Mark replied.
"Funny, you're a funny man. Thanks for the support man. So will she be here soon?" Derek asked
Mark did a little spin, attempting to see if Dereks mystery girl had arrived, he located her, finally. He spotted her and waved her towards their direction.
"She's right here." Mark said giving Addison a slight friendly push, "Addie meet-" Mark was cut off by Addison "Derek."
"You two have met before?" Mark said with a shocking face expression.
"Mr. Reeds class, day Naomi wasn't here." Addison replied, to which Mark smiled and said "Well you kids have fun."
Seattle 2006
Derek has thought about how great the date had been. Both had found interests that day, and had enjoyed each other's company, and decided to keep going on dates. Then, the dating lead to a relationship, a proposal years later, 10 years of a stable marriage, adultery, redemption in their crumbling marriage, which had finally lead to their divorce.
Derek got up and left her office, if he was going to tear up, if he was going to reminisce over their shared memories, it would be in either his trailer, or his office.
Weeks later the divorce had finalized, Addison had gotten an apartment as she had no reason to go elsewhere. At the same time, she had no reason to same in Seattle, but here she was in her empty king-sized bed, alone. She closed her eyes, before she knew it her mind went back to 1995……
Some Church , in New York 1995
"Addie, from the moment I met you...I felt something, I didn't know that 6 years later I'd get be with that beautiful redhead for the rest of my life. You've been their, heard my stories, I've heard yours. We're AddisonandDerek, always will be, have been since the day we met. One day I hope to be at the beach with you, seeing our kids run around like the little maniacs they'll be, wishing for nothing more than that, with you."
And then she woke up. They had been so ignorant, in Addisons eyes even after 6 years of dating, they were ignorant. She felt sick, thinking about all this, it had physically made her sick, then again she had a right to be sick, she had signed away 2 decades of her life away like if it had meant absolutely nothing, to either one of them.
Funny thing had been, both Addison and Derek missed one another. Derek didn't want Meredith, Derek didn't want Addison in pain, but he had to give attempts, a real attempt.
A knock was heard and Addison got up, she didn't know who was there, but they better have had a good reason for disturbing her so late.
Addison opened the door, there stood Derek, soaked from the rain… she had caught him as he was fixing his umbrella, he quickly straightened up and looked at her;
"Do you still love me, the way I still love you?" Was what came next, from Derek's mouth.
