Unfinished Business
By: Karmyn
Why is Captain Gregg still around?
Author's Note at end.
There was no doubt in Schooner Bay that Gull Cottage was haunted. There were always
strange noises and sudden rain storms emanating from the vicinity of the beautiful little house.
No one had been able to live in the house until Carolyn Muir and her children rented it. She and
the children never mentioned a ghost, but young Jonathan had picked up that salty language
somewhere. Men who attempted to date Mrs. Muir often found themselves the victims of bizarre
accidents. One even claimed to have been nearly strangled by his convertible top.
Yes, there was no doubt that Gull Cottage was haunted. But why?
Daniel Gregg had never given much thought to why he had stayed to haunt Gull Cottage
after his death. He had spent more time there as a spirit than he had as a living man and had
learned to accept his fate. He was lucky. He had met many spirits that didn't know they were
dead or were forced to repeat the moment of their death over and over. Some stayed behind to
finish some task left undone during their lifetime. Saddest of all were those who were unable to
contact the living for help with their tasks.
Why did he stay? What unfinished business might he have left? There were a few things,
but those had recently been taken care of. He had made his peace with Vanessa, assured a home
would be built for retired seamen, and gotten the Schooner Bay Beacon to print a retraction about
his death. He had done these things with help from Mrs. Muir. Ah, lovely Mrs. Muir. Had he met
her when he was alive, things would have turned out much differently for him.
He watched her play with the children down on the beach and thought about how much
things had changed in the two years since her arrival. She was the reason he stayed in Gull
Cottage all these years. He had been waiting for her, waiting for love.
The End
Author's note: I've studied ghosts for much of my life and have read the various theories on why
ghosts exist. Some are doomed forever to repeat the moment of their death, some return to where
they were happiest, and some have unfinished business and move on when it's completed.
Captain Gregg left some unfinished business, yet stayed after it was taken care of. Only one thing
could keep him earthbound and that was his love for Mrs. Muir.
