Burt sat down on the armchair and looked straight at the boy sitting on his couch with his back slouched. He knew that Kurt was only pretending to be busy in the kitchen but was probably listening on them. He was a father and his job was to protect his son but if Kurt had seen something in this boy, had chosen to forgive him for his mistakes and had fallen in love with him, then Burt was sure that he had to give the boy a chance.
"When I was in high school, I was the jock that picked on weaker kids and called them names. I was like you and Finn and just like that boy that made Kurt change school last year."
Puck looked up surprised when Burt started talking but didn't interrupt.
"Kurt is just like his mother. She put me in my place, told me to prove how strong I was with guys my size and not freshmen, she called me a coward." He smiled softly, remorsefully. "I still wonder what she saw in me, her parents sure as hell couldn't get their minds on what their daughter could see in someone like me. But in the end, they accepted me because she loved me and Kurt loves you." He stopped for a moment. "I hope you realize that."
Puck nodded. "I love him too," he said easily because it was the truth.
Burt nodded back and tried to discretely wipe away the tears from his eyes. "Before meeting her, I doubted that I could fall in love but then it all changed and I'm happy she took a chance on me. I still love her very much. If Kurt loves you, then you're worth giving a chance because that boy can see past what other people see. So I won't threaten you, I will just trust Kurt."
Puck managed to smile a little, to let Burt see how grateful he was. "Thank you, Mr. H."
Burt nodded and called out, "You can come out now, Kurt." He laughed when his son walked inside the room with moisty eyes.
Kurt hugged his father and said, "Love you dad."
Burt patted him on the shoulder and pushed him towards Puck. Laughing, Kurt sat down next to his boyfriend and entwined their fingers together. He leaned forward and whispered into Puck's ear, "I love you."
Puck kissed him softly and smiled at him before they curled up on the sofa and watched Deathliest Catch with Burt.
